|
|
I am looking to replace my drivers side dog leg. Here is the catch. I realize the replacement doglegs are easy to find. However, this one was hit slightly so the floor buckled (about an inch in to where the dog leg meets the floor). So, I need more metal than what comes with the replacements. Should I A) cut out the old dog leg (leg only) and just bend the floor back into shape and use a replacement (new) dogleg? B) cut out a dogleg, plus the floor section, from a donor bus and just do it all as one? I am familiar with welding and have done some body work. I will put up a pic tomorrow of the damaged area.
p.s. yes I searched the threads and found some great info. |

Take out the dogleg as planned, leave floor if it isn't rusted and then take a 2x6 and lay flat on two hyd. bottle jacks and jack up to the floor and then use a large flat head mallet to beat back in place. Bus Depot dogleg was great fit, geniune VW. If you know body work it will be a piece of cake. _________________ 79 Sunroof Bus named Olde Leroy

My neighbor has this crazy pair of pliers designed for flattening out metal. You just cover the whole area with the huge surface area and crush it flat. Might find something like that at Harbor Freight.
I say replace the dog leg like normal, and just flatten the floor back to the original spot. _________________ 1972 Deluxe named Lucidity

There is a slight section, right where the floor meets the seet base and it curves up, where it is rusted through and crunched beyond repair. Right on the lower left of this part http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211801051KX I think though I can just use a 1"x2" piece of metal and fix that section. Other than that, its mostly just the dogleg and this part that I will be replacing http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211809501CX
Do I even need the last part (the lower dog leg corner) or is it part of the first link with the entire dogleg? I was planning on buying from busdepot. Good choice? Thanks. |

I just did both front doglegs and rear wheel arches- its not that hard.
without seeing any pictures, Id say remove your door, cut out the old dog leg and grind away all traces of it.. then put the door back on and tack on the new dog leg so it aligns nicely with the door. Remove door again and weld the dogleg in completely. Then replace the floor section using the new dog leg as a guide to weld in the replacement metal.
If you check out my gallery, there are some pictures of some of what I did. I got a little lazy with the camera and didn't document everything.. |

I also need to replace both my front dog legs (front wheel archs). I realize this thread is old but does anyone have pictures of their replacement work?
I'd really be grateful.
Thanks. _________________ 78 Westy "Oscar"

Its all one big solid piece, don't stress! If its a late bay make sure you buy a NOS part (bus depot usually has them), or klassicfab if its an early bay. Once you have the part in hand it'll be obvious what to remove!
On klokkerholm ones that you see everywhere, the curve is incorrect and you won't be able to shut your door (trust me on this). In the wrstpn thread he used one, but cut it into pieces to make it fit. Its worth spending the extra $100.
Drilling all the spot welds out is the hardest part, I just cut mine out and butt/seam-welded my new one in. It will be hidden by the rubber mat anyways. |
