I had some older people ask me about my '69 and they ended the conversation with "do they still make them?". I had to chuckle when I told them they hadn't made them since '74.

I went into an O'Reillys to pick up some ball joints for my sister-in-law's '69 Beetle. It was starting to get hot out, I live in Texas. He started asking me about the car...what it looked like, wheels, interior, etc. When I was on my way out the door this is what he said, " Hey man, don't forget to service your radiator in that Bug. It is already hot and the summer is going to be brutal." I didn't even bother telling him it was air-cooled. I just said uh-huh and walked out the door.

You know what I would have done? I would have turned around and said "You know what? Maybe I should order another radiator for it... can you look it up for me?"

The clock didn't work in my '70 coupe so I set it to 5:00. I would always say "it's always 5 o'clock in the Karmann Ghia." For my birthday my better half made up a t shirt that had my quote.
I wore it to Disney World & had about 20 people start telling me their stories of this old Ghia they used to have or their friend had.
Of course, the younger people would ask "where is Karmann Ghia?"
I replied Cary, NC.
On a side note the local MG club invited me to their monthly breakfast. I love to discuss fine German engineering with them:D

BTW, great forum "name"! And you're probably not that for from me. My neighborhood is off Trinity Rd.

At an auction today...(see the hunting history thread for pics) guy said, "Oh hey, a Fiat!"

Another gem, "VW's are slow, you oughta just put a V-8 in it."

A gentlemen that I had struck up a conversation with earlier just rolled his eyes...he builds VW racing engines.

Just flipping through the ghia parts classifieds this morning and felt the need to make this comment.....

Don't use "NOS" and "used" in the same posting, that's a contradiction of terms. NOS means "new old stock", which means IT CAN'T BE A USED PART!

Thank you.

This has to be the strangest T34 that I have ever seen, in fact, it might actually be an unknown prototype! Laughing

Doesn't Type 34 mean, Type 3 with 4 side windows?

Yeah, but VW stopped building T-34's (in 1969) by the time that Squareback was built (it's a 70 to 73 body style).

It was also brought up in the type 3 forum as a strange looking Ghia. Rolling Eyes

Porsche 356, which kind of looks like a bathtub turned upside down.

Porsche 356, which kind of looks like a bathtub turned upside down.

One legend states that during prohibition, bootleggers used to make their illegal gin in stripped out Porsche body shells turned upside down.
Apparently this helped impart an imported taste to the final product that allowed them to charge more for it.

There's another legend that goes back to the days when Porsche was having great success in the Pan American road rallies.
Apparently one rather spectacular crash ended with a 356 Cabriolet standing on end perpendicular to the ground, with the front end completely buried up to the base of the windshield.
It was weeks before a work crew was available to dig the wreck out, and many people had begun to leave flowers around it as a memorial to the fallen driver.
A near sighted passerby mistook the wreck for one of those bathtub grottos in which a statue of a certain religious icon is often found, and the term "Bathtub Porsche" just stuck ever since.

Believe it ... or NOT. Wink
