From The SO23 regisrty website http://so-23.com/ :
I don't have much info about the bus itself...
Chassis nr 473457
Type 231
Mcode 360?
The second bill is just a little evidence Westfalia did sell their stuff seperate from the VW factory, straight to customers... _________________ Mango since '59! Bamboo since '81! |

This one is also registered as an SO23:
registry#43
14 01 0
Type 231
Mcode156
NONE - Germany
BLAU
VIN# 558556
And so on...
And so on...
It's not one of a kind... Check ID plates @the SO23 registry. http://so-23.com/
There are more among us... _________________ Mango since '59! Bamboo since '81! |

It looks like only the export busses got the Westfalia Mcode option. All other (German delivered) busses aren't Mcoded Westfalias. Interesting...
Another interesting fact: look @ the screwholes under the ID-plates... Mine has one too! _________________ Mango since '59! Bamboo since '81! |

Another thing:
All the non-Mcoded SO23 busses have the M156 code.
Look @ the Mcode archives from the Samba:

Could this be a sort of Westfalia built option code? _________________ Mango since '59! Bamboo since '81! |

if you see M-156 on a westfalia camper, it is something other than the larger oil bath air cleaner. I don't know what it is, but none of those M-156 westfalias have the holes necesary for the mounting bracket, and none of them seem to have anything other than the stock normal air cleaner. |
Our Tourist delivery 61 Standard Campingbox also has this code _________________ "Love and good roads" |

This is great. Look at the order date vs. delivery date. Also this shows evidence of a non coded "Tourist Delivery" camper ordered through a VW Dealership and picked up at Westfalia by the customer. _________________ "Love and good roads" |

Just for reference, here is a US ordered SO-42 tourist delivery bus (picked up in Dusseldorf) ordered in the more traditional way.

Yes...without subhatch. It also has the color code in German. UX export code (if I remember correct). Also Bulkhead cap on with Campingbox unit trimmed to fit. Color "Grau". _________________ "Love and good roads" |

seems to be common on the non coded Westys. I have a hunch it is probably another "without rear seating" code. _________________ "Love and good roads" |

Maybe it was the "no rear seating" code for pre 63 buses... _________________ 1957 Lowlight

My German delivered '61 flipseat has M156 also.
No destination code or other westy codes except for M361(Package including M168, M181, M192, M199).

I found these references to other 156 codes
M156 With second outside mirror 8/1960 M Option Catalog
The mirror makes more sense as it would be needed with cabinets or lack of windows would make it difficult to see. |

You don't think this bus below would have come with a mat?

. See thats my point...if its purpose was to be turned back into transporter then it wouldve had a mat... |
Been doing some more research as I put my bus back together. The bus that is closest to mine in year in Ronnie Chase's old '62 SO-23 and looking at some pictures there is a shot clearly showing the rubber cargo mat under the seat bases, so the mat you have is true to the bus and since it has no cutouts for seats, is yet another indication you have a real SO-23. As I begin to pull stuff from my garage loft I noticed that all my interior panels were and are covered in heavy plastic. Tacochris, do any of your panes show a sign of once being covered with plastic? _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Not trying to stir the pot, but can you post pics of what you're referring to for future reference? Thanks... _________________

Here is a M156 code on a Tourist delivery or German market '60 Kombi now in Alberta. I don't believe this bus was ever a camper from the pics I have seen. A second mirror or no rear seats makes more sense to me than anything westy-specific.

Thanks.....
No I didnt, my life took a different direction as most parents do and my friend decided he wanted to build the bus more than i had time for it....so, no I didnt part it out. The bus is alive and well and living a good life running and driving around Louisiana, but the individual that took it decided he didnt want the camper stuff so now it gets to go on and help save other buses who need little pieces. Since the ad has been posted Ive already helped complete two individuals campers so ide say this is a good thing.
...and you're right I was excited about it, but excitement and having the money to do something about it are two different things.... _________________ 1957 Lowlight
