I thought I would bring this up here to see if anyone may have some answers or suggestions for my fuel economy problems. I'm running a new 1776 with a 110 cam, 8.1 commpression and dual 40 Kadrons in my 67 camper bus. When I first installed the engine it ran well enough but it was noticable that the carbs could use an adjustment or something. So I took them to the Kaddie shack for a service and they told me that the carbs required a full rebuild. So I let them proceed with the reubuild and reinstalled them along with a new SVDA distributor. I noticed increased performance however my fuel economy went in the tank! Before the rebuild I was getting 18 - 20 mpg but now I getting 11 - 12 mpg at best and that's if I drive conservatively! I thought maybe the SVDA had something to do with it so I put the 009 back on it and it is the same! But now I am experiencing other problems as well. Check it out;

1. Rough running / engine vibration – The engine runs rough with a noticeable vibration at low rpms however this goes away at higher rpms.
2. Idle / stalling issues – The engine stalls after idling for 20 to 30 seconds. This is a new problem with in the last week. I adjusted the idle a couple times to dial it in with the timing and all was fine but now it wants to stall.
3. Sputtering / coughing – The engine will sputter and cough at will!
4. Hot hard start – The engine will be difficult to start when hot.
5. Stinky - Smells like it's running real rich.

A 1776 is not such a big motor so why is my fuel economy so bad. And the other issues... Any sugguestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for looking

Dual 40s does seem like a little too much for a 1776 but if they're jetted correctly it shouldn't really be a problem. Can you find out jet sizing/venture sizing/any other pertinent information on those carbs?

I think they're just right for a 1776... I ran a set for almost 10 years and got between 20-30 city and 25-35 highway.. I admit though I'm completely ignorant for the most part.. I had a shop check the sync and everything once a year..

I would call the Kaddie Shack and ask them about it.

Check for vacuum leaks and do a compression and/or leakdown test

OK, brough the bus to VW Paradise and they found that the idle jets were too big and replaced the .060 with .050 now it idles fine as well as adjusting the A/F mixture and linkage to work properly. It runs well at this point but the fuel economy is still bad, it's about 12-13 mpg and I think that is horrible! What do I check for next?

what main jets? Your plugs are fouled, that's not helping. It will take a few miles for them to clean themselves.
