So where does it come from...on a Typ1 the underhood is sealed pretty good.....is there a return air vent from the cabin ?

Leakage.
69 and later B2 heaters pulled air from inside the cabin and recirculated it. Earliers cars drew air from inside the trunk. In 65 they finally figured out that they needed to let air into the trunk, so a special cover was made for the hole at the bottom of the spare tire slot, the one behind the spare. I have a pic and will post it soon.

The stewart warner has a rubber boot that pulls intake air for heater combustion from the passenger wheel well. The blower fan just draws air from the trunk area. Important to have a good gas cap and tank vent tube to run one or you stink up the car fast
