Hi guys.
Just checked the oil bath filter today in my 67 euro 6V 1300 bug and noticed that there was no oil in the filter.
Could this have harmed the engine in the long run not having any oil in the filter? The engine has been kind of all over the place the last two months even though I have had the time and valves set and changed the plugs.
Even tried to brush up the plugs last week in order to see if the engine would run more even but it didn't do anything, it still runs kind of odd with prominent random exhaust whistle and shaky drive especially when cold.
Could the dryness of the oil bath filter have anything to do with this? Also, why does the oil bath filter empty itself?

The oil bath for the air cleaner should not "empty itself" unless there's a pinhole causing it to drain out onto the engine.
No oil in there will mostly kill the effectiveness of the air cleaner, the type of damage would be from contaminants scouring the cylinder walls. If you think that's a problem... I ask: is it burning oil? Have you done a compression test recently? Better yet, a leak-down test...
As for your uneven running, when you pulled the plugs, how did they look? Did you check the plug wires themselves for their resistance? And... what carb and distributor are you running on this?

Do you know how long it hasn't had oil in it? If you weren't running it for weeks, I don't think it would do any harm. If you have been driving it like that for awhile, you might wanna do a compression test etc. _________________ 1965 Herbie Replica. 1776cc dual Kads.
