|
|
I don't have stock rims on my Thing or as a spare. I have 4 bolt beetle rims without the large hole in the middle. As a consequence, I can't use the standard Thing trunk spare tire hold down. I just put the threaded portion attached to the body through one of the rim bolt holes and tighten the wing nut down. However, the wing nut only gets one or two turns before hitting the rim. Someone at Kubel Treffen in Dover had a longer threaded portion or added an extension to it (couldn't see how it was done). Any thoughts on how they did this or how I could add a longer threaded portion? Thanks. _________________ Buck

Have you tried flipping the tire over? _________________ 74 181 Thing

There are couplers made for Threaded rod at Home Depot/Lowes. I saw them yesterday near the Galvanized Strut channel stuff.. Threaded rod was located there as well.
I imagine you're wanting to keep the outside of the wheel facing up for aesthetics, thus needing the rod extended. Otherwise you'd just put it "face down" as the original Thing wheels were mounted....?? just guessing..
Anyway, hit up the Local supply house and get you a coupler and another few inches of threaded rod! _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

Tried that but didn't see the correct thread. Thread looks to be 10mm and the rods I saw at HD were only standard. Tire is flipped upside down and barely fits as I stated above. _________________ Buck

McMaster-Carr has these, called coupling nuts. Yes, I think the size is 10mm 1.5 They have zinc, black, and stainless. They should have the all-thread rod in metric. |

VW designed the front end with the tire up side down. They made a gas can that fit in the wheel well.

And time now for pics. I really like the black oxide coupling nut McMaster has. For the threaded piece, I actually had a 10X80mm stainless bolt from a previous order. I hacked the head off and used that. It BARELY fits with the wingnut and washer on but it's better than spending another $11 on a 1m threaded rod.
and another view.
Rims are powdercoated black Marathon Beetle rims. _________________ Buck

Looks like it'll work...
I thought you had the wheel face down though, as you stated above? Sure would work better that way.. (and give you a little storage area for spare oil, tool bag, detailing kit, etc...) |
I had the tire face down originally and it barely fit. I figured if I was going to go the extension route, I'd get one long enough to go face up to show off the rim. You're right, it does rob some storage space. But I put my poncho underneath, along with some other gear I don't often use. I didn't loose much storage space and it actually keeps that stuff from moving around the trunk! _________________ Buck
