Correct Silver. Perhaps the wires are bad once moved in the position they have always been. But what is the probability of two bad wires at the same time. I am thinking about doing a sniff test. Turning the engine over with the distributor cap removed and confirm I smell gas in one bank and not the other. It appears the apparent problem is the boot from what people have been saying. |

I interpreted it as meaning that he was testing them against the block (ie pull one off, put it near the block and see if it sparks).
I wasn't getting at whether the plug wires were good or not; I was getting at whether they are connected to the right plugs. |

Checking that the plug wires are going to the correct plugs (or are on the correct terminals on the cap) is an easier test. It is surprisingly easy to install them in reverse order.
Depending on your muffler, it may be hard to tell if gas is going straight into the exhaust...and nigh impossible to tell if it is one bank or the other. _________________ "I like how everyone likes talking about Zeke's Thing yet he's the only one that's ever seen it." - Katie

I have the exact same issue on a 1600 DP in my bus. I first found a torn intake boot and figured that would be the end of the problem but it still does not fire on 1 and 2. I will let you know what I find if I find it. _________________ Why buy what you can build.

Whew.. I am glad somebody else has the same problem. I think I was the only one. I still didn't check on my boot. Will do shortly. Let me know what you find out. Thx |

I had two spark plug wires go bad on my Beetle last weekend (both on the same bank). The brown/orange spark plug connectors came apart...
Did you ever figure out the problem? _________________ "I like how everyone likes talking about Zeke's Thing yet he's the only one that's ever seen it." - Katie

Hey Silver,
"brown/orange" spark plug conections....
do you mean the spark plug wire (spark plug connection side) or
sp wires' on the dizzy side?
Just curious, I'm planning on driving my THING to Dover, and working on some spare part lists & this came to mind.
Hope I'm not hi-jakin the thread but just curious, PM me if you think best.
Many thanks

Hey Sivler Thing. Not yet. I did change those two spark plug wires with other ones and still the same. Looking like the boot issue to start with. |

It was the connectors on the plug side of the wires. I bought some Beru (Germany) plug wires thinking that they would be a quality item rarely found for our cars these days. At least the rubber boots were made by Beru in Germany, but the spark plug connectors were made in Brazil. *sigh* _________________ "I like how everyone likes talking about Zeke's Thing yet he's the only one that's ever seen it." - Katie

Hard to know what is safe to buy these days. Pretty much better to never throw out an old part, there might be so piece, say the connectors, that will be better on the old than on the new. |

Because of this experience, I've started collecting parts to put together my own plug wire set. I've bough a few parts (connectors, seals, etc), but I haven't gotten any in the mail yet. _________________ "I like how everyone likes talking about Zeke's Thing yet he's the only one that's ever seen it." - Katie

I will be darned... I got it running. I took a can of starter fluid and sprayed on the boot for that side. Immediately it ran perfect for a couple of seconds. Hence a leaky boot.
I have heard items of replacing the boots and what needs to come out and back in. I decided to pull the engine to do this. I think it is a good thing. The header gaskets basically were just flaking off. Scraped off the gasket material with a plastic knife and reassembled. Will finish tonight and hopefully get it running. Fingers crossed...... |

Just for future reference;
NEVER HUNT VACUUM LEAKS USING STARTING FLUID!!!
Use carb cleaner, WD40, or similar. |

Hey Mr. Gel,
Please enlighten me about the starter fluid? Un-safe? makes the engine run hotter? Thanks |

You can have a Flash Fire, esp with Ether.
WD 40 could be a tad safer but it too can flash fire.
but in process of spraying "whatever" you sealed the air leak (best guess).
as I stated before, I had a rubber vac plug missing from a carb, found it accidentially while spraying wd40 on the carb in it, ect while engine running.
Just remember its a flammable product and heat can cause a flash fire (not good!)

Starter fluid (ether) is very explosive stuff! I've heard of people being killed using that to inflate tractor tires.
Think about it. You use starting fluid so that it will blow up inside your cylinders when gasoline won't! |

Thanks. I didn't realize that WD-40 had some flammable qualities. Good to know. |
