My friend bought a 79' rabbit recently and I was driving with her in seattle when all of the sudden it stopped in the middle of rush hour! yay. The starter still attempted to work but it wasn't catching at all.

I looked on the floor and found a yellow wire with two tabs
I looked at the fuse box and noticed the fuel pump relay* was missing
so... I tried various combinations of relay holes with the wire and eventually it started up....

But... I could hear something on even when the car wasn't running.
Now the battery is dead and the car is parked in a limited parking zone with delightful $44 tickets that show up every two hours.

Question: IS there a different yellow wire configuration I should be using until I can get her a relay that won't drain the battery? thanks!

(also: is there any way to roll start an automatic?)

*edited from starter relay to fuel pump relay

That's the fuel pump relay, notice the little red/yellow wire going to it.

You can not pop start an automatic, so please don't try.

I'm sure if you do a proper jump start, it will fire up.

Here's when I was screwin around with the same thing on my 'ol White Rabbit.

She can roll with the jumper for a little while, but she should definitely try to buy the actual relay, it's much better.

okay thanks, the issue is that it was running fine with that jumper cable in place and not killing the battery. The current placement is the first one that let the car start again, but there must be a different placement of that wire that will allow the fuel pump to run, but not kill the battery?

Quote:
So to bypass the fuel pump relay, just pull the relay from the remote socket and install a jumper wire between terminals #2 and #8 on the remote socket on the top of the fuse panel.

I believe that will only have it on with the key on, but you should double check it using a test light.

I don't know about jumping the positions but what about pulling the relay in the K spot and putting it up where you have the jumper and see what happens?

Thank you,

David

yes that way kills batt.. pump is humped to run at all times as long as those terminals that make a t are crossed...

one of the other wires is hot when key turned on... that one to the wiring going to fuel pump makes it run when key turned on..
