Something that has driven me mad (not really but bugs me <grin>) about the waterboxer is how VW so haphazardly designed the waterboxer while inside a Vanagon.

Hoses running all over from every angle and just crap loaded on top making what is the coolest looking engine into something that looks like dung is poured on top. (Well again, not really but kind of... hehehe)

Here is what a gorgeous waterboxer from Vanistan looks like before installing in a Vanagon. Just so damn hot looking. I want one now.

To now installed in a Vanagon. All these wires and hoses coming from every place and just does not look nice. Too bad VW could not figure out a way to clean this up a little. They made a gorgeous engine look like a shamble of stuff like they thought last minute we need this and that and oh yeah that too. Just not right. Twisted Evil Twisted Evil

OK, it just bugs me and I needed to let it out. I know I should not worry about it and be thankful she runs and runs well. I just like stuff orderly and in place.

Look at the aircooled engines. They routed cables nicely and it looks so simple and clean. Heck, the Subaru boxer engines look real nice even installed inside a Vanagon. Too bad VW could not do it.

Why do you think they put that thing in the trunk?
It wasn't meant to look at.
Hell, it can barely get out of it's own way.

Makes me think of Pinhead from Hellraiser. Has stuff sticking out from every direction.

Compare the images side by side and you will see it to.

I know where you're coming from. The basic long block is good looking, but by the time you put all the cooling system and intake/fuel system on the engine it starts to look like 1001 work-arounds.

I guess the best thing to do is realize the Wasserboxer is the highest evolution of the Type 1 engine. The cooling system and a lot of other accessories were add-ons that weren't originally intended to be there. It all works better than it looks like it would and that's what really counts.

Why one wouldn't be tickled pink to have an expertly build motor and spend some time with zip ties routing and securing the lines is beyond me.

My last Vanistan install was described as a "work of art".

Spend some time Dude, it ain't that hard to have the engine bay look great....
or not.

Sorry, no amount of zip ties gonna make that mess pretty. Too many coming from every angle. At least if they all came from a uniform area one could do that but I have yet to see an organized looking 2.1 waterboxer engine bay. I just wonder what VW was thinking or not thinking when they designed it. Of course I am not designer but just a consumer, but still have an opinion on how stuff looks.

I would indeed be tickled pink to have one of these engines. That was not the issue. Issue was, VW sure has a rag tag put together it seems at last minute engine bay was all. I think most will agree with that.

I think D Clymer was spot on in his assessment.

BTW, I think the 1.9 engine bays look cleaner than the 2.1. I wonder what happened from 1.9 to 2.1 to make it look messier? To me the 1.9 was cleaner looking.

I agree she was mighty purdy, after her recent overhaul I wanted to pull up a stool and have my dinner right there on the block.

Insyncro, thats not my motor. Man I wish it was!

It is a picture from the forum.

If I had it I would still call the engine bay ugly though. hehehe. Not the engine, the engine bay and how all the hoses and crap cover up that beauty.

I live in CA, so getting a S H6, not gonna happen. To my knowledge that would not pass the smog bar.

I do like the 2.2 subie though. It does look lean and mean in a Vanagon. But alas I am more into staying as close to stock as one can so.

BTW, talking about rats nest... I had some rats or mice living in the engine bay. Had to vacuum out all this stuff they collected and made a nest. Chewed on some important wires too damn turds.

Also a thought.... have any of you ever seen a VW watercooled Vanagon marketing literature that pimps its engine bay and graces the pages with images of the engine bay?

Anyone have a stock VW picture that shows off the 2.1 in all its glory?

In older split bus days VW always showed off its engines in ads. I don't think I have ever seen a vanagon ad pimping its waterboxer. Wonder if VW was not proud of it?

What a great reason to NOT live in California.......

having to settle for a 2.2 instead of H6.

Whoa....bogus Dude.

I've seen some Chris C. engine installs that looked incredibly sanitary and drool-worthy. It just takes some time. I'm currently striving for the following as my template. Clean and deliberate, with everything where it needs to be, and no where else.

Would love to see pictures if you know of any online.

Maybe there is someone out there that has done magic down in the engine bay.
