free shipping to a tire store not too far out of my way. |
Closest drop I could figure out was in Mission Viejo. That is not "that" close to San Diego. It would be an hour drive each way for me to go to their drop point. All they seem to have listed is Alan Tire stores.
Where did you go? |
Curious which shop you got them sent for Free too?
They do not have anything in the San Diego area. I called and asked. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I live more north so Mission Viejo is not as far for me. It was a 90 minute round trip including picking up the tires. I wanted a chance to see the tires in person before accepting them. It was a smooth transaction.

I just installed a set of these CP521's in 215/65/16 and so far I'm pretty pleased.
My local shop matched the $73 internet price and just charged me for mounting and balancing.
Around town I notice absolutely no difference in power with my 2.2 subi powered 91 Westy automatic.
This weekend I went on a trip to the desert and the rpm's were lowered by about 300: when my speedo read 60 the GPS indicated 67mph and the tach was at about 3700.
It cruised the highway effortlessly, pulling grades w/o downshifting, but I did have to grab 2nd slightly earlier than I usually do near the top of the steep parts of highay 62 heading to the high desert.
The CLK's and larger tires give the van a more modern, capable look too.
Thank you Walt for the suggestion and the Tirecrawler info! |

Hi all,
Can I get some feedback from those out there who have been using these tires for a while? I'm in the market for new tires and am seriously considering these.
Thanks,

Strange you should ask!
We just pulled mine down off the pallet rack to finally use them!
Has it been almost 2 years already?????
I got an exceptional set of CLKs that I have been waiting for since December yesterday.
Next week they finally go on.
My old full camper will then be sporting factory alloys with Hankook RA08s that have been good to me and shall live on. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Don't think I've ever seen any feedback on this particular tire.... _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

A quick google reveals a little:
http://www.tyretest.com/van_light_trucks/nexen/cp321/index.html
Seems this is a not bad tire too, but seems not to be a USA tire, or at best, it seems to be hard to find.
The specs for the 215/65R16 in question are better than the same size CP521 in question here.
NEXEN CP 321 - 215/65 R16 109 T 8-PR
I just can not locate that tire in the US.

I fell like I am necroposting but I am happy with my CP521 and also glad to see we may still be able to get them for $73.03 still:

If you do some googling, the tire seems to be available at more tire places now.
Keep looking, maybe you find it for less money..... _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Walt or anyone else with this tire size,
Was the performance "hit" noticable with the slightly larger tire diameter? I too have a fresh EJ22 in my 87 Westy, but it has stock gearing (4-sp stick). I'm concerned about the potential loss of power while driving around San Diego with our varying topography. Trying to decide between a 215/60-16 and 215/65-16. I've read all the posts but still uncertain on which way to go...
Thanks!

Adam.
Going from 195/14 to 216/65-16 I noticed no loss in go power with my EJ22.
First and second are always the challenging gears with the EJ22.
No matter what, the soccer moms are going to crawl up your behind.
You can drive my van sometime, if you want and see. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

Thanks for the reply and offer. I'm not as worried about 1st and 2nd gear, and I have no current issues with them on 215/60-16's. In fact, my van gets off the line pretty quick with the EJ22. Perhaps it is a difference in our driving styles, but I usually drive my van pretty mellow.
I am more concerned about the effect (if any) that the larger tire has on mild highway grades (using stock gearing) while cruising and commuting at 70-75 mph on the I-5/I-805.
I got a quote locally at Bear Tire in Miramar for $460 out the door, so I will probably go that route and get the slightly larger Nexen's, but any other comments on their freeway driving characteristics and wear would be appreciated.
Thanks everyone and happy Friday!
