Looks good- did you shorten the lug bolts yet? I need to shorten 8 of mine on the Oval |
Yeah, I trimmed them to size with a cutoff wheel. They are flush with the inside of the drum when tightened down. Went over to Two Bros and got the tires mounted the other day. _________________ 63 Beetle

Great- those guys know how to mount a tire without damaging the wheel _________________ Experience is a hard teacher because she gives the test first, the lesson afterwards.~Vernon Law

Started working on the engine compartment this week.
The original tarboards are in pretty good shape so I'm going to heat them up and see if I can flatten them back out.

Some pics of recent progress....
Got the tarboards straightened up by heating with a paint stripper gun and sandwiching them between some plywood with weights on top. Painted with satin finish black and re-installed:
All the stainless trim is installed:
Finished up with the tailight, turnsignal, and taglight seals:

Got her up on stands tonight to get started on the rear. The plan is to pull the backing plates to get powder coated, install all new brake components and hoses, drain tranny, replace axle boots. Might replace rear wheel bearings and seals while I'm in there as well. Then install drop plates and new bushings and shocks.
Got out the BF Torque Wrench to remove the axle nuts.......... no problem!!
Makes even the most stubborn axle nuts a breeze, these were not bad, I could almost break them free with one hand!
Rear brakes as found:

Stripped off all the tin from the engine to send over to the powdercoater along with the muffler, heaterboxes, pulleys, valve covers and intake manifold.

Haven't added to this thread in a while since most of the stuff I have been doing were mundane, boring little things. So here are a few updates. Last weekend at Volkstock with the help of a few aircooled friends, the valve springs were replaced with new and the carb was cleaned and rebuilt.
I sent the tins and some other bits and pieces to get powder coated. Picked them up this afternoon:
Started reassembly of the fan shroud:
and the generator:
I even went as far as duplicating the little dab of white paint that originally sealed the regulator screw.
The stale air muffler is now ceramic coated:
Next up will be this............

Got the stale air heater boxes reassembled:
and started to test fit the tin until the new cheesehead screws come in:
