82 Westy....
Leaking oil from the oil cooler area - engine is coming out to diagnose and fix, correct? Just want to confirm.
Any other words of wisdom? I hear that the actual units are pretty robust and rarely leak, it is the seals that are most likely the culprit. Checked the sender hoping that that was the issue, but no luck, it was dry as was the surrounding area. _________________ 1982 Westy

I am pretty sure you can do the cooler with the engine installed, but probably easier out and in an engine stand. Have you verifed the leak is not the oil pressure switch? On the aircooled, I am pretty sure it is mounted right above the cooler area. _________________ ☮️ |

Yes - the oil pressure switch was what I meant by the sender unit in my original post
Probably be heading to the local HF and picking up an ATV jack... any tips on replacing the seals so I do not suffer this malady again? Don't know what tips there could be though...just replacing seals.... _________________ 1982 Westy

I would be concerned that the new seals might be too old from sitting on the shelf for so many years. It is a pain job to do and it might be worth getting the seals from a company that sells a lot of them. Maybe FAT in Ca. or maybe a Porsche specialty shop. For the seals to work, it depends on the dimensions being exact. They are pressed to the proper tension when the cooler is tightened to the case. Too thick and they press out, too thin and they leak. I would have the cooler pressure tested before I replaced one though. The seals are more likely the problem. A new cooler might be junk too. I replaced a cooler on my 68 from a reputable supplier to be on the safe side and it leaked. _________________ ☮️ |

Yeah, just replace the seals. They eventually lose pliability due to heat and fail. I probably wouldn't bother pulling the engine, but it will be easier _________________ Casey--
