I have a 1980 VW Vanagon 2.0 fuel injected.
I was driving some long Seattle to Shelton Washington and just as I was taking the exit to Shelton my Vanagon just died on me. I had power but found the problem was now fuel pump. After some testing I found it was the relay and replaced it new. $100.00 at bow wow auto parts here in Seattle. Then it wouldn’t idle and the air flow meter was clinking and clanking so I tested it as my Bentley manual tells me and I think it was bad so I replaced it salvaged from the internet wrecking site sj from N.Y. and plugged it in and there is no difference so I bought new distributor cap and rotor, cables and plugs and spent some time, timing it no luck adjusted the idle (without a tack Confused ) and now have broken spirits and wallet. Any suggestions

If your AFM is slamming shut when the engine is cranking you may have the dredded sucked valve seat. check your intake valves for 1 standing proud(sticking out mone than thr others) If this is so it's new head time. GOOD LUCK bill

Start by looking for vacuum leaks, poor electrical connections, checking the fuel pressue as per your Bentley, and doing a compression test as per the Book of Ratwell Verse 1.1 http://www.ratwell.com/technical/FAQ.html
.

Post those findings here. And then start calling around to see who can do a leakdown test in your area.

I'd be willing to bet that when it stalled, it backfired back through the intake and blew a hose off somewhere.
