Mine is an '85 so it has gaskets on both ends. Didn't snap to the fact that the 86> uses a donut on the engine side.

There are specific donut gaskets that have a recess in them for the weld.
Check with an exhaust vendor.
I use them often when there is a inner ridge on the mating surface. |

I'm thinking that the physical size of the Cat I was sent is the 86> so i just took a pic of the engine side of it and I don't think the factory was thinking about donuts by the look of this weld. The muffler side has the same weld.

I used a donut (included with the cat) on my 89 on the j-pipe side. It sealed nicely.
Same welds as in pics, both sides.
The donut, with the three cinch bolts to work down snug, allows some adjustment in aligning the various exhaust pieces. Worked fine in my application. A key in fitment was to undo muffler straps and rotate the muffler a bit to find the proper lie.
You can also try the donut type that is fibrous... it will compress a bit and possibly seal better. But you often have to replace those if you disassemble again.
Purchased my cat (for the 89) thru Van Café. Bolted it up and passed a smog test 2 weeks later with lowest numbers I've ever seen for this vehicle.
It was expensive.. but sure saved a lot of hassle. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

So your Cat is the Magnaflow since this is the only one I see listed on their site? Although he did mention to me that they can get the DEC Cat's.
I'm liking what I see from Catco at least as far as pricing. I fired off an email to the vendor for availability. _________________ Peace, Regis |

That is just Max Auto. Others want more.

True dat. Today's business world takes multiple forms of communication.
I just sent a fax and I'm launching the carrier pigeon right after this. _________________ Peace, Regis |

Anyone know if the 91135 a direct fit? It says "some cut and weld may be required" _________________ 1987 Westy |

Does anyone have any suggestions for CARB compliant cats?
I dont feel like dishing out 1000$ for a GW cat. _________________ 1987 VW Vanagon Wolfsburg Weekender

Look on the bright side- at least you can get one. I had the cat stolen from my 2012 Prius and there is a five month backorder (and who even knows if they will have one for me then?). I used up the insurance rental car after a few weeks, and am now borrowing a vehicle from my brother. Fun times. _________________ 1986 Westy Weekender

$1000 is the right price for a cat with the right stiff inside.
The cheap crap will have 1/4 as much cat, for 1/2 the price and won’t pass carb
No, it won’t “ sneak through” _________________ .ssS! |

Appears to be legitimate CARB executive order D-280-94. Also seems to be $350 at Walmart online with free shipping. and 5 year warranty. Hopefully someone here with one installed in California or Colorado or NY will let us know how it went at the smog test. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia, stock (bought 1994)

FYI, their listing is wrong. The AP CAT has no 02 sensor port, so it won't fit later Vanagons. _________________ - Ron Salmon
