i will be getting into the 80 Westy that was downshifted into 1st @ highway speed.
see: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=567194

i've done some searching around; assuming i will need a new torque converter and i have some questions for those more knowledgeable than me:

1 - can i use ANY van torque converter and/or would it be advantageous to use a non A/C unit from a later van?
some of the usual suspects are listing a converter, but for 86 & up vans.

2 - any recommended source for a used unit?
there has to be a van specialist out there that has some & there are none in the classy's here Sad

thanks!

I am very happy with the stock converter in my 91 with a 2.2 Suby. I don't think that you would get much better fuel economy by going to a lower stall speed, but could surely lose performance. At highway speeds the engine is going to be turning at pretty much the same speed on matter the stall. A lot of the benefit of the Suby engine is that it will easily rev higher than the VW engines, not that it has so much low end torque.

Midway through the air cooled Vanagon run VW went to a converter with a 2750rpm stall if I remember right and kept with the high stall through the WBXer line up. (I seem to remember someone posting that VW had gone back to a lower stall on the 1.9, but don't know myself.) The earlier air cooled used a 2450 rpm stall, IIRC. The earliest T4's had 1750 stalls and were transmission fluid burning dogs because of it.

In other words, a late Vanagon torque converter should be fine for what you need.

Try German Transxale of America for a rebuilt torque converter.

I am a little surprised by all of this. I have never owned an auto T3. I did spend about 3 long years of my life rebuilding autos and every one I know of had a mechanism to stop the trans being down shifted at speed. The old ones had mechanical governors, newer ones used the ecu. So is this a design issue or is there a common sticking valve in the valve body or something?

i was able to contact GTA in Bend, OR and will likely buy/exchange through them.
what i was told on the phone was that their "book" lists the same converter for 73-83.5 and there are three different units for waterboxers.
through some searching i read that VW superseded the 003 converter w/ the 010 unit and that seems to jive with what i was told.

so the question remains: could there be any advantage or disadvantage to using a later unit on the air cooled engine?

thanks for bringing this up.
i will admit i know little to nothing about auto boxes but would like to address this issue if it is possible.
maybe this is an example of the governor being damaged from flat towing or coasting neutral?
