I have tried various searches in the classifieds & get no results when I search for ball joints to fit vw bus with torsion arm front suspension.
Suggestion & recommendations welcome.
Thanks |

Halsey Imports, Bus Boys, Bus Depot, there are many places that are going to have them just a phone call away. Easier to buy them already installed in the arms instead of trying to find someone local who knows how to press the out and back in. |

Ummm...do you have a NAPA or Carquest in your town?? Order from them, you don't always have to go to a VW parts place.. _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.

Several techniques on doing so and lots of threads, most end up electing to let an experienced shop do it. |

I believe all the bus ball joints are the same from 1968-1979. I take off the torsion arms and take them to my machine shop guy. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Just a guess, but I doubt that a $38 tool is going to do the job for you. You will probably need a $200+ tool and then pay more for all the necessary extra bits and pieces. |

After watching the videos of the guy removing and replacing ball joints I did some looking around for the tool. I found everything from that $37 kit up to a Snap On kit for $470. Usually when doing jobs such as this I've found that cheap tools will soon break and it's better to spend the money and get a quality tool that will last. The other thing is that you probably will need lots of misc. steel shims, etc as you do the job because it always seems to just work out that way. A $37 tool kit just isn't going to have the strength that a Snap On would metallurgically speaking. That said I'm holding off on buying the ball joint kit. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

If they are still crimped(never been changed before) it is very hard to do with that tool and impossible without the fittings in the second photo without messing something up pulling the arm and a press I find is easier as a matter of fact I torch the joint out if they have never been changed before that crimp can be a bitch but you better be REAL GOOD with a torch or you will be buying new arms. Out of all the jobs I do on bus's every day ball joints are the one I diss like the most not that hard I just hate that job. _________________ where its cold and snowy |

What's the going rate to have the 4 ball joints replaced by a mechanic? And can the average auto repair shop do it or does it need to be a real VW shop? I'm a good distance from the big wicked city _________________ Gnarly Goat Rancher |

It should be a proper vw shop these are abit tricky to get right and you need the right vw special tools. That is why place's like Bus boys offers arms with the new joints pre-instelled exchange. _________________ where its cold and snowy |
