I'm gonna keep it on the road till Spring, when the drivetrain is going to be put into my '74 Riviera, F/I and all. I'll part out the rest. This thing is just too far gone to be a candidate for any sort of resto. Sucks too, I'm the second owner. I even have the window sticker for it..... |
Glad that Spring has come and gone multiple times and the Rusty Bus has lived on _________________ 1966 Velvet Green Standard |

Have I mentioned that I love that bus? Cause I do. I had one of the snow covered parking lot pics as my desktop at work for awhile. _________________ '71 Westfalia |

Great story! Having grown up in Minnesota I can relate. Be careful if you ever pass through there in the winter though, Minnesota doesn't allow chains believe it or not. Judging from the bottom rot though I'm guessing it probably came from there originally _________________ 1967 Deluxe Sedan w/Factory Sunroof

Thanks everybody, this Bus really turned out to be a keeper after all. In fact, I do still have it. It's terribly rusty but it's still sound enough for at least one more season. It's in storage right now but I will have it out before the end of winter, hopefully in time for the True Canadian Winter Bus Campout in February, 2014. Life has been pretty hectic lately but this is so much more than a Bus at this point, it's part of the family. It won't go on forever but I'm gonna rock every mile I can out of this thing before it gets retired. _________________ First Trip in the RustyBus:

I'm reading through your post and it gives me hope for the pile I'm building up here in rusty Wisconsin. Glad it's been so good to you! Oh yeah.... I wish the body on mine had been as good as yours when I started on it. Would have been a lot less work. Love the side door...
Keep it rollin....

Thoroughly enjoyed this thread. About 10 years ago I got a similar bus for free. It was even a Champagne Edition, but I didn't understand the significance of that at the time... Anyway it was completely rotten and had been sitting in the local Marina parking lot for years and was so full of old boat garbage, that you couldn't even get inside. Just for fun we thought we would see if the old bus would run... The ancient fuel smelled like turpentine and the points were covered in green fuzz. Cleaned up the points, hooked up some jumper cables, reached in past the garbage and turned the key. Bellowed into life after 3 cranks and even idled! Lots of funky smelling smoke but it actually ran! Cleared out just enough junk to sit in the drivers seat and stuck it in gear. It moved! The brakes were crap but worked a little so a highly illegal test drive took place. The trans happily had all of its gears, and was quiet too! As this bus had serious structural rot, and no papers its destiny was for parts, and it gave up a lot of good stuff to help other buses stay on the road. Wish I had kept the interior, because it was all there including the middle seat.... DUH!!! Best wishes at keeping the Rusty bus on the road as long as you can!!! _________________ 1974 "Restfalia" Camper 2000 cc EFI 2001-
