Looks great all around.
Is that bedliner or sounder dampener on the floor of the van?
Which brand?
Keep up the good work. |

Hi Dylan,
Thanks!
It is bedliner. Spent countless hours scraping the old insulation off and applied adhesion promoter with Upol Raptor. It came out really nice.

Chazz,
Due to the complexity of mounting a turbo, I decided to go the supercharger route. The sc12 has it's own oiling system and alleviates the complexity of routing the exhaust, intake, and oiling system with a turbo. A few have done it and have been successful, but I find the supercharger fits my needs better, even though it robs a little power to make power.
Good luck with your project!

And you thought a turbo was difficult to install!!!! Fitting a supercharger is probably the least efficient way of boosting the already inefficient Waterboxer, , with 10psi with the right turbo you would be at 200hp and over 200ftlb on a standard 1.9!! And not to mention the tuning difficulties when running a supercharger.
Install looks great and good luck with your project ,but for me turbocharging would of been the wise choice. |

Thanks!
As requested, here's some more pictures of the intake plenum. It was designed on the computer with models to test airflow. At first, the airflow was not very smooth, until the length of the intake runners were modified, along with adding intake bells.

I thought that looked familiar. Saw it at Mario's a few months back. Looks
like things are progressing. Mario lives a few block from me. |

Thank You Scott.
You are helping to relieve the sting of letting go of a nice Syncro.
Very nice job.
Be careful though, now I'm thinking I might like two rides!

Hi Jeff!
Can't wait to show it to you when it's completed. It has turned out way better than I expected.
Hope to see you soon.

Just found this thread spending some time on Samba. I am normally on Vortex (MK2 forum). But tonight I did a search for supercharged WBX and your build came up.
The build and progress is epic.
I am planning to supercharge my van at some point and am glad to see you have already forged ahead figuring out a lot of what I have been thinking for my plans and build.
I can say I have been more than happy going supercharged with my 86 GTI G60 that is running on CIS-E. No fault in working outside convention.
While turbo is great, I get a grin every time I am spinning wheel from a rolling start instead of waiting for boost to build.
Tuning may present some challenges, but in my experience I have not seen any that cannot be overcome with some trial and error and a careful eye on my WB .
If you have not already planned it, I recommend a diverter valve plumbed to recirculate. And if you come up with an intercooling setup, I am keenly interested in the updates.
Thanks for the details and documenting your F/I WBX build .
Keep at it.

Any updates to report?
As you know I run LH from a Volvo in my Vanagon.
I am in the process of trying the Saab version of LH and APC on another 2.1 for my Ghia with the turbo from the same.
Removing the Saab injection harness is much easier than the Volvo.
Although the APC harness is integrated in the main harness.
Buying a running junker for $500 you can get everything and sell the rest for scrap. |

Sorry for the lack of reports!
Progress is going well, however, the main focus has been putting the van back together. It's starting to look like a van again!
The engine is very close to completion and will provide some photos soon. Mario at The Dub Shop is really making this a nice setup.
The biggest hurdle I will have is the wiring. We have added two expander boards to completely eliminate all stock gauges. Everything now will be displayed on an android tablet. I've added provisions to view main and aux fuel level, speed, locker engage/disengage, all pressures and temps, along with boost. It will be displayed on a tablet, customized for aesthetics.
The dash is getting completely redone too. The top is getting welded up, filled, and then re-designed. I'm adding aluminum seat track material to hold various equipment and gadgets and the tablet will be mounted on a ram-mount.
This project has gone way beyond what I initially thought, but it's like a drug and I can't stop!
I will add some photos very soon! |

Putting a van back together is a slow process for sure.
Take your time.
Looking forward to seeing this engine completed. |
