Hello everyone. Been a VW fan since an early age since my parents had a 1980 Vanagon Westfalia when we moved to Germany. We drove all over Europe in that thing and I have always had a soft spot for the buses since. I bought this '74 for $500 from a family member. I think I did ok on price. It has been sitting since 1996 or so and I am afraid I have my work cut out for me. Here are some pics before and after the first cleaning. Still need to clean the top more. Apparently there was a sink in there at one time and maybe a stove.

I forgot to post an engine pic sorry. I know NOTHING about these types of engines so I am a bit intimidated right off. I don't even know where to start. Well, first place will be getting a key made for the ignition. My wifes grandfather had door keys made but they don't turn the ignition. They slide right in but won't unlock the steering wheel. My rear hatch is also stuck.

I would suggest you get it on the road, safe and legal first! Don't get in over your head (especially since you are new ).
-Get a Bentley manual and the "Idiot" book
-Replace every single piece of fuel line
-Replace any missing tin (looks like there's some gone on the left)
-Install an engine seal
-Complete tune up, ignition junk, oil change, adjust the valves, etc.
-Rebuild that Weber progressive (they can be made to work pretty well)
-Inspect the brakes (you’ll most likely have to replace just about everything but the hard lines)
Once you get it running you will probably have several oil leaks show up, but most are easily fixed. Just dried rubber bits here and there. Does it turn over freely by hand?
Ask questions here before you do anything. Small things like over torqueing the oil drain plug can have disastrous results. _________________ 1976 Westy

Someone put a progressive single carb on at one point. I have a vid to of what a stock dual set up looked like as well.

To be honest with you in the beginning when we were loading it on the trailer I started having 2nd thoughts and was thinking of flipping it and making some money. Then I got her home and my wife actually decided she liked it and said she wanted to keep it and restore it. It's highly unusual for my wife to like any of my projects so I think this one is a keeper! For now I just want to get her running and in good working order. Eventually I would like to do a full resto. Not sure what they run but it would be nice. _________________ --1974 Westfalia--

It's the plaid My wife fell in love with my '75 Westfalia because of the blue/green plaid. It is also the first of my projects to capture her imagination.
Good luck to you! _________________ DJ

I've got a '75 tin-top Westy with a very original blue/green plaid interior...I definitely like it the best of the plaids (with the green coming in a close second, IMO). Let me know if you need any pictures.
