So a solution to the puzzle was given by snowsyncro. Run two 16" wheels on one side and two 14" on the other side.
This lets the front pinion shaft turn at the same speed as the rear pinion shaft, easy on the VC. A little more work for the open differentials but not too much for such a short distance.
