That's about right. I paid $14 at a dealership, and they had to fetch it from the warehouse, so an overnight delay.

Regardless, it is thrilling to have this in place. I've been corresponding with the Bus nut who brought it here, and HE found it in a German Bulli forum back in 2007/2008. So this has been out there for a long time, just not much awareness.

I wonder how many other parts are out there that are excellent replacements and we don't even know about them?

just thought id share some info
on a metal filler hose that has the bend in it
eliminating the need to make it at a exhaust shop
the way i originally did 6 years ago at the begining of this thread...

dont remember what year this tube came from
but maybe some of you cant post what year you have
and style tube you have so others willknow what to expect

the short metal tube is what is origanally on my 76
the long tube is what i found on many other buses


if you have the short metal tube in your bus
the best thing you can do is find the long tube that has the bend in it
at the next car show or in the classifieds
which would eliminate 1 whole step in
fixing the fuel filler tube

I think the longer tube showed up during the '76 model year, or at least during the '76 calendar year. Certainly the way to go if you can find one.

Recognizing the fact you guys are particularly discussing the more complicated late bay system which gets talked about frequently.

But little talk about early bays in searches. My '71 takes a 2-1/4" dia. x 7" long straight hose connector which is a NLA VW part. Scott in Canada has them listed and another option is whacking off a piece of the $40 available hoses with bends.
Yesterday I got the good hose at NAPA. Fuel filler hose P/No NBH 1055 which you buy by the inch.

That long pipe is in my 78 also
I also ordered the Dodge Sprinter fuel filler part
It fit great, it has to be easier than wrestling a straight piece in.

Here's my fix just to get a little more info out there. Went with replacing the short rubber tube with a metal tube. Went to my local muffler shop (Collins Muffler) with the OG rubber tubing, told them I wanted this replicated with a muffler pipe, had them shorten each side by about 3/4ths inch to allow for me to get a straight rubber hose that I got from NAPA for 25 bucks (Steep priced, but worth it) Hose claps can be had from NAPA for about 75 cents each as well. Anyway... Here it is.

In the above picture, I used some silicone around all the end of the rubber tubes just in case, not that I think gas will ever get there, but it's a fail safe if nothing else.

Regular RTV silicone doesn't handle gas all the well, hope using it doesn't cause you any problems down the road. Certainly let it dry very well before filling the tank.

I saw that before I did it, but I figured it's only a preventative measure anyway, so I figured it couldn't worsen things by any means. We will see. I'm sure by tomorrow I'll re-think it and pick up something a little better. Gas won't be in the tank for probably at least a month anyhow.

Thats the thing, is that there aren't many good options as far as being "Gas Safe" goes. By doing some research, it looks like something called Hylotyte Red may do the job, but then you are back to the whole "I won't be able to get this apart" thing. IMHO, what would you need to take it back off for though? If it doesn't work, you will probably end up starting from scratch anyway.

EDIT: Looks like Hylotyte is actually only semi setting, so it may work as far as being able to take it back off goes as well.

Wow, my local NAPA wanted $25/ft plus tax for that 1055 hose.

And here is the Sprinter fuel hose for under $9 plus shipping. I got two.

Worth springing for the higher quality Norma worm drive clamps. They handle a higher clamping torque and don't eat into the hose.

I know this is an older post, but after finally replacing my front suspension I went to put fresh gas in to the Leaking Lizard and the attendant shoved the nozzle in hard enough to separate the rubber filler tube from the metal filler pipe. Without dropping the engine AGAIN, is it possible to access the filler opening through the round, black panel in the engine compartment? I need to slide the rubber boot over the metal pipe.
