The DOHC 2.5l is only 165hp, not 190. They also have a pretty poor headgasket reputation. The bad headgaskets often lead to bad rod bearings because people will run the engines until they stop from massive overheating when the headgaskets go. The engine will fire back up after it cools off and a shop replaces just the headgaskets, sending a hurt engine back out to blow the rest of the way up shortly after.

They are a good engine, they just have a bad reputation due to the headgaskets. Replace them preemptively with the updated ones from Subaru and it will be a great engine for you.

These engines make up to 200 hp stock when matched up with this ECU. That's pretty well documented. This one was put on the dyno and made 190 hp. I read up on the head gasket issue while I was considering this car. A lot of them get over 100,000 miles before this happens. I'm hoping that mine were changed when this swap was done. It's something I will be keeping a close eye on. Thanks for the "heads" up Laughing

Then figure out what you want to do for the long term, 901 or 091. Type 1/3 trannies are just too fragile (that should get some panties in a wad, hehe)for that power and especially that tq.

easiest option.

Good catch Vlad, the scooby tranny seems like a no brainer.

It almost seems too easy! like, no major mods or cutting. I need to look into this a little more, but it definitely seems like the way to go. Wow, that guy did some serious tube minipulation on that notch. Gives me some great ideas.

what do you mean good catch? I thought this was industry standard when doing a suby conversion.

always thought "wtf?" when people were using adapters and doing all this crap to run suby engine with porsche box. why when you got this?

and then people say Aussie's did nothing for the vw community. Rolling Eyes

now vws can be strong and powerful and no longer fragile.

isn't that right Tram Wink

Fixed that for you.

And while all of you australians think anything subaru is god's gift to the motoring world, it's not the solution to every situation.

The gears are expensive, and subaru trans are not bulletproof. Now maybe with a stock non-turbo motor in 2wd it may hold up, but it's not like swapping in a mendeola or anything.

All in good fun BTW. Very Happy

Car has been performing very well. It's really fast and sounds great with a stock muffler. It started running hot at one point, and after pulling the thermostat and wasting a bunch of time I figured out there was a loose bleed valve that had allowed air in the system. Still working on the plumbing one piece at a time. I've also gathered most of the turbo parts. . . more pics to come after I finish the radiator mounts this weekend (hopefully)

Glad you like it Smile We too love it. Check this run at the Hilo drag strip. This is with auto trans and AC too.

So I'm back at it. Getting the seats recovered now and next I want to stop the heat from coming in through the back seat. Deciding on either building a cover for the engine or building a firewall behind the seat itself with some kind of heat proof material stuck to it.

Thanks, this looks like exactly what I need to put an end to long, sweaty trips. I ordered a roll and should have it before the end of the week.

So what tranny is in the car? The one from Subarugears or are you running a tranny with the kennedy adapter plate? Could you take some pictures of the mounts that hold the engine in? I'm trying to get some ideas.

What are your air pressures? You only need 20/24 lbs air pressure in the fronts/backs.
