How do I know if the whine from my rear end is the trans or rgb's? A steady howl noticable at about 40 mph, increasing in volume with speed. Sounds like it's out of gear oil but it's not. |

Block up the back of the bus and turn the wheels and listen. _________________ Why buy what you can build.

Does the noise go away if you push the clutch in? If it does or make a little less noise then its your mainshaft bearing, If thats your problem better get it fixed now , If that bearing lets go it will whipe out 3rd ,4rth and the case, and maybe more,I build transaxles for a living |

Noise seems to stay the same whether it's driving or coasting, clutch in or out. I didn't get to jack it up and run it this weekend, I was painting my ghia. I'll see if I can try that this week.
Throwout bearing noise? Hell, I drive those till they fly apart! |

I have the same type of noise, but only in 4th, and only from about 35mph to 40mph on acceleration. Then it goes away. Also sometimes after long periods of 50mph or so it goes away completely. What the heck is that? _________________ I build complete Westy Style camping interiors check them out here > www.rjcampers.com

I forgot to mention...I only hear the noise when I engage the clutch!..(when I'm going slow enough to hear it)...The tranny is a rebuilt unit with about 6,000 miles on it...I'll be leaning (hope'n) its just the throw-out bearing.. _________________ FOOK CANCER

Hey super64, Mine was making that noise and I just started having trouble with 4th gear slipping, mainly uphill. 3rd is starting to do it now too a little. Too late for my tranny? |

ok..I pulled the motor out tonight and found my throw-out bearing being held on with only one clip! ...the other clip was in the starter cave...So I guess it wasn't too bad...the bearing showed some wear on the rim..so I'll be replacing it.... _________________ FOOK CANCER

Hi everyone.
Sorry for resurrecting this thread, but I have a similar problem.
Much like the case of the OP, the whine coming from the rear end of the bus starts at about 40mph and gets louder as speed increases.
If I push the cluth or lift off the gas the noise stops.
Is my mainshaft bearing doomed? |

I'm betting your ring and pinion is worn. Change the gear oil and you might add some silence. |

Sounds like chipped / broken teeth on the pinion gear... whines under any load. _________________ '71 panel, now with FI
