I have a recently built engine and after complete assembly I noticed the cam plug (o-ring plug in a new aluminum case) twisted when I buttoned up the case. After a small cuss session I applied some black RTV to seal it up. I haven't started it yet but after a couple of weeks to think about iron wondering if I should disassemble and split the case to redo the cam plug. I'm wondering what the chances of it leaking.

Which parts? Just kidding, I didn't think lack of lubrication would be a problem if it leaked. Seeing how the plug just keeps it from leaking out of the case. Now if all the oil leaked out so the pic up tube couldn't pick up any I see how that could be a problem.
But there shouldn't be enough pressure behind the plug to pop it out with the groove for drainage being there. Should there?

Much depends on how large a hole might have opened up with the cocked 'front' cam plug. RTV is a great general engine sealer but it won't hold up long under very much pressure. Taking apart your motor one more time isn't that tough of a job - but its even tougher when its coated with oil. And you've had to remove the motor to take it apart.

Its your motor - make the call. Let us know what you do.

I think my cam plug may be leaking in a recently build..... 2332. It runs great but we're getting a drip from the flywheel side of the engine. It's either the flywheel seal or the cam plug.

Is there no way to replace the cam plug without splitting the case? Any kind of sealant to put over the cam plug to patch it up?

You can remove the old plug and install a new Mexican rubber plug without splitting the case.

Glen, is it state of New Mexico or a "new" Mexican rubber plug? Also, who carries them?

Usually if the factory plug is leaking it's because the drain is partially or totally plugged and oil builds up in the space at the end of the cam and starts getting pushed out. If you pop the plug out to replace with an o-ring style take a piece of stiff wire and make sure the drain is free of debris or sealant.

Great advice, thanks. I thought the cam plug was questionable when I put it in. Live and learn.

Drill a small hole and use a screw puller.

Or center punch it and try to grab the edge.

Cool. I'm breaking it in on a stand. If it leaks then I'll replace it before installing the motor. The car has a removable apron so if it starts leaking later it won't be to much of a hassle to pull the motor.
