Today I got a new VW book wich is loaded with 1953 factory Pictures.
Named: "Als der Käfer laufen lernte" by Bernd Wiersch.
In 1953 there was produced a very complex promotion immage movie by the volkswagen company. Named "Aus eigener Kraft".
That was shown later in cinemas and on official vw events.
Along with the film shooting there where made fotos wich had been stored ever since. Now this book releases them the first time.
A true treasure.
The whole process of making the cars is shown and also lots of the people wich where involved. A pleasure to study the details and I just have started.

Another book in German I am adding to my collection. I think I am going to have to take a crash course in reading German because not being able to understand the text is driving me crazy.

There is one less available. Very Happy

These pictures prove what I have said before, most VW's are over restored.

The front suspension was assembled as a unit from mostly unpainted parts all the way out to the the brake drums. The entire unit was painted after it was assembled. The shocks were already painted and the backing plates appear like the might be painted but it is possible that they are not. I have seen pictures from other VW factories that showed the same thing. So the inside of the brakes might have been unpainted. As great as most brakes and suspensions look on detailed restored cars, they are technically not correct.

Fantastik! One thing these books will never give you are the smells and sounds of the factory. Whenever I look at Peter Keetman's book I wonder what it must have sounded like to have all those bodies rolling overhead on steel rails.

Wow! I LOVE those pics from the factory. And as Chris pointed out, they tell us so much about how these cars were really done when they left the factory.

I notice the "Zwitter" intake and single screw, late SWF ribbed sems in the pics...

The photo on page 124 with a man staping body numbers, excellent!
