after months and months of storage i am able to use the tilt on my 68 doublecab. the wood is bowed and the canvas needs attention but it is functional and very enjoyable. i hope to have it entirely restored in a short while. the canopy is a heavy duty type vinyl perfect for everyday use in the pacific northwest. i will be replacing hardware, a little patching, and assorted improvements. haven't seen too many like this one.

Think I may have one of these same tilt for a single.
Does it have a stitched in badge by DSU?

Like this?

I have one of the same material I've had in storage for roughly a decade.

Yes, I got Jorma! If you don't know Jorma, you don't know Jack. Very Happy

I'd love to see some more tilt action on this thread. Might be a year before I start working on mine.

If it's heavy-duty vinyl looking stuff, I think that is what VW called a PVC canopy (M-code 209).

B-snakes - Stay tuned. Once I get my hoops and wooden stringers in order, I'll be putting up the original canopy on the single cab, and a repaired original one on the double cab. I have original hoops and canopy material, but will have to have the middle single cab bow and all of the end hoop caps (or whatever they would be called) fabbed up by DG Creations.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1173743
I'm shooting for next summer.

But I still need some attachment details... information appreciated:

How exactly do the feet of the hoops attach to the bed? I have what I think are M-10 threads on the two single mounting holes on the front, but just open holes on the back -- two on each side.

How exactly does the front hoop attach to the back of the cab? Is there supposed to be a captured nut on the inside or something?

Any photos of these attachment details would be most appreciated!

That much I figured from the holes in the hoops and in the trucks. But how exactly do these work? For example, the PO on the single cab just schmeared over the old bolt holes into the cab with filler, and the analogous holes on the DC were just badly ripped open holes in the body.

What is supposed to be there?

And what is supposed to be in the back to bolt into?

IIRC from when I took the hoops off of the SC I parted out....the through bolts replace one of the bolts on each side that hold the female connector that latches the gates up.

what is suppose to be there is a capitve 8x1.25 nut that a bolt would attach the frame to.

from the factory there was a 8x1.25 bolt, washer and rubber gasket in place there. you would remove them to put the framework on there.

the bolt's, washers etc were on every truck to plug the hole weather or not you bought the hoops

you guys are going to make me take pictures, huh?

The DC has those captive 8x1.25 threads on the bed up front, and I have them plugged with bolts. So, I get what you are saying.

Are you also saying that a similar (or exactly the same?) setup originally existed for the pairs of holes at the back of the bed, and for the two holes that go forward into the back of the cab?

That makes sense -- I just want to confirm that that is the original setup.

If so, then I will go about getting all that welded back as it should be.

It won't be long until we put down the bed and bulkhead. Captive nuts make total sense.

Good timing! It will be a snap to put those in before assembly.

Consider me teased. Cool

Seriously, detail photos would be much appreciated. I can't find anything in the gallery pertaining to the mounting of hoops to the truck.

All nuts welded.

I don't have a pick of the forward bed, but I think there is only one mounting point on each side.

Here are photos of the original (and unrepaired) canopy for a 1978 Irish double cab. Note that the front and back have separated from the main part.

Now I have another question.

Did VW ever make a cab-height canopy?

Like this:

I wonder if it is legitimately NOS, since I did not know VW ever made this. But, here is a part number written on it:

Thoughts?
