Can people post pics of various options? Mine was chewed on by a PO (or maybe his dog).
I've heard that the automatic shifter handle from a mid-to-late-80's Audi sedan is much nicer.
I've also heard that the ones from certain Jettas are nicer.
But I've never seen any pics of either. _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

Randy,
I believe the automatic handle from a Mk2 Golf or Jetta is interchangeable with the Vanagon handle. I don't have a photo of one handy, but it is much more anatomically shaped and it looks a lot better.
The Vanagon handle actually was used on VW and Audi cars from about 1973 until 1985. I've always wondered why VW didn't switch over to the newer handle on the vans when the cars were upgraded.

Here you go...
This one is from an '86 Audi 5000 Turbo IIRC. I think it's the same as the Jetta/Golf ones. It's certainly feels and looks much butter IMO. Nice, cheap upgrade if you can find one. _________________ "See The Glass As Already Broken."

Like this?
Look pretty similar to me, don't know it'd be worth tracking it down but I guess if you need it anyway... _________________ ---------------------------------------------------

The Audi one looks and feels best. That picture is very familiar. _________________ '91 Vanagon Carat

As fraggle found out, they are fragile as hell, and they're often already cracked on the underside when you find them in the boneyard. _________________ "See The Glass As Already Broken."

Has anyone just opted for some aftermarket new handle? I would think that there would be a lot of options out there, it's a pretty standard looking mechanism. After all, there are less and less Audi 5000s to strip for parts, and as Johnathon mentioned, a lot of them are broken already. _________________ '91 Vanagon Carat

I've been thinking of using a gated shift assembly from a later Audi or MB. These could then use a regular ball type shift knob if you like _________________ Casey--

Here is the part number for the Audi/VW "alternate" auto shift knob:
447-713-139-A-01C Satin Black
I rarely see it for sale anywhere, and when it is it tends to be prohibitively expensive. World Impex used to have them.
I've also seen this part number cross-referenced for Porsche 944's of the same era.
If you're in the junkyard you're probably going to be looking at 80's Audi/VW/Porsche stuff anyway. Just add it to the list, and you'll find one eventually. _________________ "See The Glass As Already Broken."
