Found this on a 77 automatic. all the wiring is stock wiring, now stock burned wiring....but still stock. heres what i found, and sorry about the rotation of the pics, its from my phone...
heres the harness connector, and the extra wire piece:
note extra pin near my thum, terminal 12 now has the extra wire
yes, i realize thats for a kickdown os something, i have read about it on the AFM troubleshooting flowchart, but i dont have it in front of me so i dont recall what its for.
my real question is, what the heck is the sensor for? _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

isn't it a air temp sensor so the edu can sense what the ambient air is? _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

That's in the AFM, I recall seeing something about that sensor years ago but can't find anything right now, something to do with the auto trans or spark advance or a rev limiter based on case temperature. I'll keep looking. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I just redid my harness and did not have pin #12 in my ECU Connector. What is that pin for? _________________ 1979 Mexico Beige Westy auto

Pin #12 is for the altitude compensating device installed on some Colorado delivered units according to this:

Though this subject does not affect me, I'm always impressed by BD's and others ability to scourge the depths of the Bay files. |

I'm with you there! A true wealth of knowledge. Let me throw one more curve your way BD. I have my L-Jetronic harness connector that according to the picture, looks like I am missing a wire in slot 86a, which according to the manuals appears to go the starter. However, this photo was taken before my rebuild and I didn't leave anything out. My harness worked fine beforehand. Am I missing something? (Please disregard the letter designations, that was for my own placekeeping.)
Totally hijacked this thread too, sorry! _________________ 1979 Mexico Beige Westy auto

Wow, that is a great link, thanks. His disclaimer on the bottom states to not worry if you're missing anything as they tend to be a little different from year to year. I'm going to take that angle! Fingers crossed.... _________________ 1979 Mexico Beige Westy auto

You should be able to find a red wire with a white tracer going to the relay from the starter solenoid. As others indicated VW swapped things around a bit from time to time. |

How about someone lost one of the screws that holds the tin in place and had the sensor handy. |

With stock wiring? Hmmm..
Ill check the sensors resistance and see what it adds to the system. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose
