|
|
I came across a seller selling multiple 10 inch badges which he advertises as genuine OG 43+ year old badges. They are very smooth so I removed the primer and there are no signs of rust or pitting.
Can anyone confirm if these are original or repros?

There's a teeny tiny VW in a circle stamped on the back in the middle if it's the real deal. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I've seen that VW symbol on the back, but only on modern badges, did the German badges all have a stamped logo? _________________ magoo classic car mugs

This is the stamping from an original '71 Bus emblem.
the studs are also not brazed on an original emblem, they are spot welded or spun welded on. the brazing could be repairs, but you never know. what i also see in the op pics is that the studs do not seem to have the light spline them as they do on an original emblem. _________________ SL |

This is an original '71, not going to remove it to look for a stamp. I can't tell from your photos, but it almost looks like there is an extra indent in the circle surrounding the VW.

seeing that the pins appear to be brazed on, i say it's fake (or had been repaired) _________________

The dip around the outer edge looks rounded on the bottom too, OG ones are flat and the edges of the stamping are sharp and crisp like Steamr's. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

there are lots of fine sand / polishing marks too I can see. Typically that shows up in newer products. The stuff made in GErmany the 1960 - 70's had a great deal of pride in the manufacturing. Same on many of the Japanese products in the late 70's and 80's. From what I have seen inspecting products, those type sanding marks show up in Chinese and India made products in the 2000's.
Why not look for a good used one and have it re-chromed? |

i have 5 early emblems. 2 repainted white ones, a chrome, and an original red paint one that i grabbed off a wreck (had a dog living in it) in the ditch in Greece years ago. those 4 are all heavy metal, and the chrome one is chromed steel. none of those have any marking int he center, and im 99% positive they are all true originals.
the fifth is like the one in the photo here with the little "almost" vw looking symbol. this one is stainless steel and pobably half as thick of metal material as the 4 originals. its flimsy and dents easily. feels much cheaper, like tin. as such i always thought these ones are repro's. am i wrong? _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion

Not trying to hijack your thread, but...
When we were kids, we finished breaking off the logo on our dad's 1969 bus, but my 1970 bus' emblem is all metal.
What material was the 1968 bus emblem made out of?

I have my original 1968 emblem. I also have a cheap repro emblem that I had before I got my OG one rechromed. I'll post pics in a bit when I get home and you can see the difference in quality. To the original poster, I'd say the pic you posted is a cheap repro IMHO. _________________ 1968 Deluxe "Clipper L" Type 2

Heres the 2 side by side. OG on the left, repro on the right. The real one is much heavier.
From a different angle:
Here's the back of the original:
Close up of the mounting studs:
And the back of the repro. The studs were welded on like the one in the original posters pic. They ripped out when I had to remove it. It also tweaked the whole emblem. I hammered it out to its present state, and it now makes a nice decoration on the wall of my garage. The metal feels thin enough where with a minimal effort one could fold it in half. Not the case with the original.

Those are great comparison pictures! Thanks for posting. Your original is exactly like the one on my 1970 bus, so I wonder if VW used the same emblem from 1968 through 1971 or 1972?
I need to get an emblem for my 1968 DC... |

Thanks for the pictures. Interesting that some original badges don't have any logo on the rear.
The two badges I have are very similar. It's obvious that the one I posted above had the pins repaired but the pins look identical to your original badge djdh68dlux. I doubt very much that every official badge will be precisely identical over the years.
Mine have a decent weight and certainly wouldn't suffer the same type of damage as your repro badge when stressed.
Perhaps weight can help determine quality? 13 oz for the badge pictured at the top of the thread and my other badge is 11 7/8 oz. What weight are people's originals? _________________ magoo classic car mugs

I have two emblems - one from my old '69 Westy and one that was given to me and I was told "just bought brand new". The one given to me has that logo stamped in the middle on the back and the one from my '69 has no logo. The one from my '69 is heavier and thicker and the pressing is sharper and crisper. _________________ Joey

Kept this from my 70 I sold years ago.
It's very sturdy and heavy, I'm confident it is original, it has the spot welded posts but it has no stamp.
