Ahhh yes I've been waiting for this thread!

1969 Tin-Top Westy, but pretty much a Kombi with a Westy bed.

Miles: 9048 - beating my Jetta with 5k something!
Gallons of fuel consumed: Again, I don't want to know. Wink
Overall MPG: 22-24
Number of Oil Changes: 5 or 6
Number of Valve Adjustments: 4 because I had to, 3 more because they're fun…
Other maintenance of note: Yeah but I remember good roads more than maintenance Highlights include a Vintage Speed muffler, Konis, and minor rust repair from a bad empi roof rack.
Trip-delaying breakdowns: 0
Road-side repairs: 3 or 4 fun "issues"

Electronic points fried: 1
Campouts: over 50 nights spent in the bus. Mostly urban boon-docking, but many family campouts and a nice month living in it with a new job.

2013 has been a busy bus year for me. All buses discussed below can be seen on my web page, linked to in the sig.

The 1978 Double Cab BlueBird spent the entire year on the rotisserie getting metal work done. Miles: 0. Lots of $$$ spent on metalwork.

1974 Automatic Westy:
I liberated this nearly-all-original bus from Albuquerque in February, cleaned it up, got the engine rebuilt, and got it all roadworthy and running well. This was sold in June to a couple in the UK and was named Button. I got only a few hundred miles on it myself, breaking in the new engine.

1975 Mexican Single Cab:
This unique pickup is temporarily named Arándano (trans: blueberry), but once it is returned to its original gray, I will have to rename it. Maybe "El Raton" (the mouse). I dragged this poor abused truck home from San Antonio in April, not knowing its full history. I since have contacted each of its four previous owners, and have begun some serious (if slow) restoration work. This year saw removal and replacement of incorrect parts, an engine rebuild, new tires, R&R on brakes, etc., tracking down of its original hoops and bows for the original PVC canopy, and it has gone from a non-functioning pitiful thing to a well-running truck, though it still needs work. I have run it for less than two hundred miles on its own power since the engine build. This one has occupied a lot of my "bus time".

1979 Transporter:
Snickers came up for sale on Craigslist near Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, four hours south of me. One trip to check it out, and another to haul it home, and Snickers was ready for my special TLC by the end of June. Being mostly original, Snickers needs only minor restoration, and will get it. I hope to get the FI system back into it (instead of the single carb it has now) some time in 2014.

1974 Wrecked Westy:
Half way through December, I spotted this poor wrecked Westy in a wrecking yard in Santa Fe. The previous owner had hit something while drunk (allegedly) and never retrieved it from the wrecker. I am currently undecided if this should be resuscitated or just put out of its misery and parted, and I have not had the heart to name it. Wreckfalia?

As you can see, I acquired more buses than I sold, so I now have an inventory of 4, half of which currently run.

But all in all, 2013 was a great bus year for me!

I put 8000 miles on my '77 in the first four months of the year and later in the heat of summer put 1300 miles on it in about 26 hours.

1968 rotted out Washington doublecab: about 50 feet. Sold to some EBay dude in San Diego.

1968 California doublecab: About 50 feet, too. Nestled into the garage waiting its turn with an ass-load of cardboard boxes stacked up on it.

1973 Automatic tin top walk through: About 60 miles after the transmission rebuild and light engine refresh, when I discovered a pending intake valve disaster. Parked. Robbed its new KYB gas adjust shocks and new Hankooks for the '77 bus.

1977 CE-1 sliding roof bus: About 100 miles towed to home after purchase. Haven't actually tried to start it yet. New battery tray welded in, along with engine, transmission and shifter refresh. Gas tank renovation, CV joint re-boot and repack. Electrical troubleshooting, still need to attend to the horn. Starter and alternator professional overhaul, fuel injectors cleaned and tested at Witchhunter. Maybe I'll actually start it up and drive it for the first time this January.

1970 bus: Actually drove this one about 6 miles from where I bought it to where I parked it...waiting for the 1977 bus to get rolling.

I guess I saved a helluva a lot on gasoline this year owning a VW bus.

Miles driven: I started to keep track but lost count. It was well over 6,000 though at last count
Gallons of fuel consumed: Who knows...
Overall MPG: Between 15-18MPG
Number of Oil Changes: 2
Number of Valve Adjustments: 1
Other maintenance of note: Transmission refreshed, new shifter rod bushings, engine detailed/cleaned, rear fog light and switch added, re-packed CV's, patched and painted some rust spots on the body, new slider door roller, and installed rear "headbanger" cabinet.

Exhaust leaks. about 1 every month. Finally rebuilt exhaust
Campouts: Slept in bus about 12 times. Took 4 trips to Algonquin Provincial Park.

Plans for next year. 45th Anniversary of Woodstock in August.
What has the bus taught me? I can rebuild anything with a Bentley. Patience and this is a true sickness that has no cure other than driving a bus.

'75 Poptop Westy, ABA/JH 2.0L watercooled swap

Miles driven: Roughly 10,000. Down from 14,000 last year, but the Bus was parked for most of May (trip to Europe) and most of September (complete brake overhaul)

Fuel consumed: Didn't keep track, not even gonna guess.

MPG: 19ish in-town, 21ish on the interstate

Oil changes: 3, due for #4 shortly

Valve adjustments: LOL WUT?

Other stuff: Complete brake overhaul in September, replaced everything other than backing plates, hard lines & booster. Beyond that .. changed the oil, rotated the tires, drove the piss out of it.

Went to one show, three campouts, a GTG in Seattle (hi Notchboy!), and contemplated (but did not accomplish) heading south to Redding to get some In-N-Out for lunch on more than one occasion. Also decided to build custom rear cabinets (starting on that tomorrow) so the closet can be easily removed for hauling 4x8 sheets .. and because the ones in there are falling apart.
