It's basically a freezer here in the Midwest at the moment, and my VWs are all tucked away hibernating. Having nothing else VW related to do, I figured I would compile and document my history with this awesome single cab.
It pains me to even consider it, but I may have to sell it in the next few years if my job situation changes. We'll see.
My chapter with "Scoops" starts in 2007. At this point I hadn't had a VW since my first one, a '70 bug back in 1993. I had always wanted a single cab, so one day I started killing some time looking for a single cab on Ebay. I came across this:
And what's this?
And, since it was only a few states away, I watched the auction and contacted the seller after the auction ended. He sent me some more pictures and told me how he basically dug it out of a field in the middle of Mississippi. He knew the previous owner and mentioned that it had been special ordered for a farm truck. I knew I had to have it, even after seeing some horrific rust. We agreed on a price and I had the heap shipped to mid Missouri:
362 - North American export model with M20, M24, M25, M90, M176
004 - Dust Free Air Intake (German factory version)
010 - Extra sealing for engine compartment
178 - RPM limiter - 1200cc engine
195 - Adjustable bench seat/backrest
GREEN - Turkis!
UO = New Orleans destination, shipped up the Mississip' to Glass VW in Greenville, MS
While it was making the trek, I located a recently rebuilt 1600DP in a wrecked bug and picked it up for cheap, stripped it, repainted the tin, and changed a few bits:
When it arrived, I was immediately overwhelmed by the amount of things needed to be done, and the rust holes made me break out in cold sweats:
This is right over the driver's rear wheel. It has strange rust...the rockers are solid for the most part, but the bed is toast. Other than that, typical rot.
I first tackled cleaning it inside and out. I didn't take many pics at this point. After cleaning, I tackled the running gear.
I took out the leaky transaxle, cleaned the surrounding area, and replaced the axle boots and trans mounts:
I had to have a buddy cut one of the spacers off so I could do the seal kits:
I also replaced all of the brake components, fuel lines and a bunch of other bits, did a dual circuit MC conversion, and did lots of rewiring. While working in the cab area, I noticed that the drab gray paint on the inside was flaking off in areas. I bought some cheap oven cleaner and went to town:
Much better! I decided to try the outside, but this little tiny bit took a LOT of work:
So I abandoned paint stripping for a while and got back to mechanicals. I cleaned the gas tank, installed a new sender, a buddy and I got the engine installed and running, bled the brakes, and I took my first ever spin around the parking lot in a splitty. Yay! (No pics...boo!!)
This is right after I got it running and bought some cheap Walmart tires for it:
At this point I started driving it around a lot. The steering was sloppy so I adjusted and greased everything, and replaced the center pin bushing, tie rods, and drag link. I started racking up the miles by driving it regularly and going to a few shows around the state.
A buddy and I fabbed up this sweet header / tractor muffler setup:
Here it is running!

I enjoyed driving it around and everyone asked about the "scoops" on the back, so the name stuck. Here it is in Eureka Springs. My friend bought a bug shell for $40, and I hauled it back to MO:
This was my initial vision for the truck at this point:
I didn't end up lowering it, though!
Since it had a crappy paint job, I decided to do some industrial-style logos:
I also painted the wheels and front bumper:
A couple of nasty trucks:
I ran it like this for quite a while, until I got sick of the blue. I started experimenting with some chemicals (see test patches inside the gates) and ended up using Jasco Green Strip. It worked great:
When I got around to the driver's door, something cool happened:
The extra layer of white paint protected some of the blue and primer underneath, leaving faded logos on original paint!
The real magic happened when I buffed out the beautiful turkis paint:
I did the window seals / channels:
I found a rear bumper:
Somewhere around this time, I got the "bug" again, and bought another project, a '62 turkis bug, and progress pretty much halted on ol' Scoops:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=310508
I still drove it quite a bit, though:
Eureka Springs '09
It ended up in Hot VWs:
I finally got the roof stripped and buffed (it was really baked on):
I didn't really trust the Douglass tires, so I hopped on the ol' Grabber bandwagon:
Fast forward to last year...It started developing an agonizing miss. I couldn't figure it out. Eventually, I pulled the engine and had a look at the (mismatched) heads.

I decided to do a single port conversion after discovering several cracks in the heads, and go back to a stock muffler setup.
(I now have the damper pipe, tip, and etc.)
It runs great as a single port. I also switched from a 34-3 with an SVDA to a H30/31 with a Bosch 010. Love it! _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

OH YEAH! Finally a thread on this beast! One of the rarest Buses in Missouri! I love that old Bus, and I hope you choose not to sell her down the road. Great old and rare Transporter Culley!

Pretty much the last project was a steering box. I don't have many pics of the process. Here's a few:
I could NOT get the steering wheel off, so a buddy made me a Mad-Max puller:
It basically jumped off after that. I had the original steering box rebuilt by Wolfgang Int. It is now installed.
That pretty much brings us up to date. I've just been using it for what it was designed for:

Nope, I have done zero metal work on this thing. There were a lot of rust stains.
I'm not planning on doing any metal repair either...I kind of like the "survivor" status. _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.

Nice truck! I know what it is like to strip paint back to original. I love lowered buses but am glad you kept this truck stock height. Hard work does pay off in the end. _________________ 64 Kombi

Nice job on the paint striping, all that work was well worth it !!!!!!!!!
I all ways wonder about the "Back Storey" on some of the cool Buses/Trucks that Samba regulars own. I hope you get to keep it.
It was -5 degrees this a.m. here in Vermont, stay warm... _________________ Tom

Thanks for the props, everyone. Stripping it back to turkis was very rewarding and it instantly became my favorite VW color.
As always, there are tons of things that need work, including finishing the interior, the king / link pins are worn from all the dirt roads, hubcaps and clips, etc. The next major project for it is to figure out why the hell the big nut trans tops out at 60ish mph @ 4000 rpm. I suspect some frankenstein transaxle action... _________________ Copyright CJ Industries, Inc.
