|
|
Hi!
I haven't been here for along time... but am back to get some wisdom on what our van, Butters might be worth. It was a tough job with lots of chin scratching and mysteries to solve, but we got him up and running. Hubby has been driving him to work every day with no issues. BUT.. we now have a new project- a beachhouse on the puget sound, so we really don't see ourselves using Butters too much- the house is a real fixer upper so will require a bit of work.
So we are thinking of selling our Westy, but really don't know what a reasonable price is.
Here are the details:
84 Westy
Auto transmission
things it has or things we've replaced/added:
canvas
aux battery system
awning
awesome new Nokians ( standard size)
new interior upholstery
working stove
fridge works on propane and electric
propane furnace
rebuilt throttle body
almost all coolant lines
all fuel lines
all brake lines and brakes
insulated window covers
new cap rotors plug wires distributor
new fuel and water pump in the box ready to go on.
tons and tons of spare parts
I'm sure there are more things I will add them as I think of them
the only cons are:
small amount of rust ( primered) on one of the rear panels,
an intermittent short in the fuel gauge and temp gauge
when it rain it smells a little like a mouse in the passenger side pillar area
I don't recall the mileage I will have to go check.
I'll get some pics on here... we are between seattle and tacoma- just wondering what we should ask for our Butters. Would like to find someone who will really appreciate/use him!
Thanks in advance!

Not remotely enough info to assess a value.
What engine? Miles? Rebuilt? When? By whom?… same for trans.
How old are all of the items you listed?
Stock or upgraded fridge?
What "spare parts" specifically?
(Large) Photos... are worth a thousand words.
Could be worth $5K - $35K depending . _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

This is the sticker on the engine-I believe this sticker indicates it was rebuilt, albeit way back when. We haven't had any trouble with the engine or tranny. They were the only things that worked when we got it ( or so it seems)
New Propex heater
new hard start relay kit
new oxygen sensor coil
new Fiamma bike rack
new hatch struts
new batteries
new fuel tank sending unit
new rubber mats
new fuel pump
fuel injectors cleaned/tested
new van cafe poptop canvas
upgraded headlight relay
new South African mud flaps
coolant tem sensor
new tranny governor seal
new wipers, antenna
stereo with MP3
new poptop gasket and seal, ignition switch,
fuel tank re-sealed, transmission serviced
stock fridge and stove
Those are the easy to find receipts/records. I believe it has 200K on the van, but I seem to remember that this sticker on the engine means something ( see above)
thanks! _________________ 1984 Westfalia a work in progress " Butters"

Rust means 10k max to me. The other parts accessories are nice, but no knowledge of rebuild on drivetrain and a car that needs a paint job really reduce value.
Luckily you are in Seattle where people overpay constantly. |

The only rust is under the grey paint. Hubby has the correct yellow paint to do that panel, I forgot about that! _________________ 1984 Westfalia a work in progress " Butters" |

Susie,
You two have been plugging away at the camper for quite some time. Each post has made me smile. You live in the PNW, that means you can ask whatever you want. Butters runs okay, camps well and is ready to find a new home PLUS has upgrades to boot.
A sure seller!
If the bones are good it should fetch $6600-10k any weekend.
.
Yes I see that the seat and curtain fabrics are not OEM, but if it matters the next owner can locate and replace as the next level of loving care. The body work is baby stuff too.
Please watch out for fellows who might try to take it without payment, i.e.- "test drive" thieves.
.
Cheers,

The seats are original under my seatcovers!
And the curtains are all stock too, or at least were the ones that were in it when we bought it.
Thanks for the kind words! we really learned alot while working on him- it was a good prep for our house project that we're doing now... perserverance and education go along way, and sometimes you just have to call in an expert!( Thanks George at Porbugs!!)

Ok........ My advice?
Stop.
Focus.
Look ahead into the future.
A Beach house is GREAT!!!!!!
Family memories, a private vacation spot, friends borrow it, a getaway all your own!
But......
A Beach House is a burden!
Fix the roof.
Paint it.
Furnace issues.
New carpet.
Windows leak.
The YARD!
Improvements.
Open it for the Season....... Close it for the Season.
Always going to the same F-ing place! Year after year after year!!! Can't we go to the Mountains just once?
I'm NOT knocking a Beach house but I've been involved with vacation homes for decades, making some good money building, maintaining, managing, getting ready to sell, etc.
A vacation home LOCKS you into going to the vacation home!
YOU NEED OPTIONS.
just because you have the home shouldn't mean that you must go to the house at every opportunity.
Sure, initially you will because you want to. Going is an adventure, it is fun, exciting, challenging, a time of discovery.
But as a few years tick by...... Really? Do we have to? Can't we go to the Grand Tetons or go see the Redwoods?
Case in point...... Done correctly.
My oldest brother LOVES sailing...... Like a dog loves riding in a car with his head stuck out of a window!
His family likes sailing...... Notice the difference in emotional attachment? To quote his wife..... "Tom loves to sail......We Love Tom".
So, Tom has his boat, large enough to venture into open seas, an older Cape Dory.
They own a Eurovan Weekender.
They own a water front house up around Vancouver BC somewhere in the Straits of Georgia.
They will sail for months, currently the vessel is in Winter storage in Northern Alaska.
They will spend a few months at their home in Oregon.
They will spend a few months at their home in Canada.
They will also travel and camp in their Eurovan. The kids and grandkids are not easily visited via sailing vessel!
A lot of words to say......
KEEP THE VAN.
You will be wishing you had it later.
You will most likely NOT get what it's worth or your investment back.
You will struggle to find a quality replacement.
Plus it's a great rolling cavernous box to carry stuff to your beach house.
Plus it's a guest room at your beach house. (Yes, you WILL need one.)
Just saying......... I'm old, I'm getting wiser as well (learning from my mistakes!)
Mark my words..... I speak the truth here.

It is worth exactly what the next owner was will to pay and you were willing to accept for it.
Place an ad in the classifieds as "taking offers".
The Samba will not disappoint and will surely show you the low side of the vans worth.
Ebay is a great predictor of value as well. |

Gonna have to agree, never owned a beach house but spent a lot of time there, worked in area and rented in winter, BUT i probably will keep my westy until it can't be made to keep moving any longer, just can't see giving up the ability to get in and go at a moments notice, hell don't even know which way to 'explore' until already on the road. |

This is so true, I can't yet get to term with the idea of going to the same place for the rest of my life, that's why I am also staying away from owning a cottage. And you are right again, these vans are so much more than campers, they are a fantastic utility vehicle.
To add to the spare room idea; at a family reunion last summer, my sister and her kids slept in my van, parked in my parents driveway, they loved it so much they wanted to get one. A few times I visited friends that had a full house, no problem, I had my house with me.
If you can only get ~7k for it, it's got to be peanuts compare to your overall home investment! Why get rid of it?
KEEP THE VAN AND STAY ON THE SAMBA!

It's not really that hard to find a comp to help price your van. Check the samba classifieds and all the west coast craigslist ads. See how yours compares to what's out there and price yours accordingly. There's no magic formula. As suggested, advertise it for what you are willing to take for it. You will get offers that let you know where you stand. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |
