I've never heard of nor seen those before. If I randomly came across an image of them I'd not even think they were VW. |

There were JC Whitney replacements that had the turn signal on top like mid-60s models, but they were sized like the earlier housings. Those has amber tops, though. I wonder if this is a similar type of aftermarket style? |

As I look through my Gallery images of JC Whitney catalog entries from 1964, 1969, 1973, 1978, 1982, 1989 and 1992... I don't see a single listing that looks like those...

I've never come across a pair with clear lenses on top in Australia, only ever amber & red.
Maybe they were specific to the Italian market? |

In Italy they sold these taillights (amber but) as long as German cars still had semaphores.

I've seen a few that have faded to clear on the top. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

Here's another gallery pic:
But again, amber not clear.
Italian maybe?
I thought a mid-60s JCW catalog sold these as retrofits to have the safety of the '62-up design on older Bugs. Maybe they were discontinued in later catalogs? A lot of lighting was sold by JCW that did not meet DOT regs and maybe by '69 they were cracking down. |

Could be. I think I seen an ad once, somewhere (but not Whitney), for the "Electric" style tail lights, but don't recall ever seeing those Italian style lights advertised. And the only lenses I've ever seen pictures of all had amber tops, this was the first time I'd heard of them being in clear... I can't imagine why anyone would want a clear tail light. Those are too nice of shape to just be faded. |

They can fade like that without much crazing.
Back when I worked at the garage one of our customers had a 61 Beetle she had owned since new that had 50/50s.
Some time in the 80s she reversed into her letterbox and smashed one.
I don't know which side it was but one looked clear like the above photos.
I can remember changing a blown brake light bulb in it and under where the screws sat in it's their recess was still bright amber so it wasnt originally clear but I don't know if it was the replaced side or the original, it Wasn't cracked or crazed.
I tried ordering a replacement lense as it was a roadworthy fail.
I hadnt paid much attention to the difference and didn't realise till I tried to get one they were a 60-61 Aussie and Italian only part.
lets just say when I finally found one she wouldn't pay what it was worth and that was back in the 90s.
Someone on AVD has a NOS pair forsale at the moment for $400..... _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

Ok, easy for me to claim now, but... those little air bubbles in the upper part didn't quite seem Hella quality when I first saw the post. But they are darn close, and a cool accessory! |
