Did 73 Thing come OG Red?

Was the 73 Thing available in red? I thought the colors were orange, yellow, and white.

Ive seen the orange start to look red. I love that your asking, makes me think you want your thing to be og. check the m-code plate to see what color it came og. I guess I'm a bit of a purest.

Right on Buckly....I am holding out for some"Thing" OG or at least painted the color it was originally. It seems so many have been painted otherwise.

Although my last post may seem to give an answer to your question, after I posted I realized I did not give a direct answer.

So, here goes:

In 1978 VW produced the following Thing with the following color (red)

Flamingo Red 35G LKL035G00 Black/Grey From 188 2032 031

My friend and owner of OE VEE Dub recently purchased such a thing from Berlin and it is red and it is a factory original paint job.

So simply stated.. Yes, there are factory painted Things that are red.

Sorry for the apparent mis-statement. In Berlin, the 181 would not have been called a "Thing" particularly not in 1968. I lived there not long after that and don't recall seeing any in the American sector.

This question came about because I saw a 74 Thing on Ebay that was being advertised as og red, I emailed the owner and he said that he thought it was imported from Germany and not Mexico.
