I have had no issues with the spare tire rack and a Yakima bike carrier. It is really close but the bike doesn't rub.
I will get pics if I find them. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia Hightop - NAHT

Here is a couple pics from my phone.
I made a hitch to raise the bikes up so the tail lamps are totally visible. I can still add the receiver to pull a trailer. This works for us.

I have found this to be a little more difficult than that ^. I have the RMW bumpers and tire swing. The Thule Apex Swing works great with the setup, without a hitch extender, and everything clears with bikes on the rack. Pretty sweet if you are into the top tube carry design. As far as tray racks, which I prefer anyway, both the thule T2 and the Yakima Hold up need an extension for the swing to clear them, with or without bikes, in the up or tilted position.
Ultimately, it is <optimal, especially if you are looking to carry four bikes in a tray rack.
Here is a pic of all four on the Holdup with the extension. As you can see there's a lot back there and the weight far from the tongue is scary. I am still looking for a good four bike method that does not involve a beam style top tube rack.

I'm thinking I'll get this and use it to extend and raise a hitch bike carrier. I haven't selected a new carrier yet, but getting close.

I'm reviving this thread post-summer to see how folks new set-ups worked out. Right now I haul bikes on our Fiamma, tow a small motorcycle trailer for longer trips, and put 2 jerry cans of fuel on the trailer tongue.
I am trying to figure out how to carry fuel cans and the bikes without the trailer when needed. I really like the RMW swing-out carrier because you can remove the tray arm from the hinge and thereby have room for the Fiamma, but then you couldn't carry fuel... I am thinking I may need another type of bike rack to make it work cleanly. 3 bikes is usually all we carry.
What combinations did you find did/didn't work? Anyone use the RMW swing-out with a bike carrier already? I'm not sure of the dimensions but I guess it would be about the same width as the tire carrier when the tray was extended...

Same question but I have a North Shore Rack (4-up)
Similar to this (but not on a FJ)
I think it'll work, and the rack rack has up/down and in/out adjustment in case it needs it.
Still, I'd like to see someone with a RMW swing out, a 215/70/16, and a North shore rack all mounted.
(or some measurements from a RMW swing out owner, relating the wheel to the body) _________________ sold -> '85 Wolfsburg Syncro / 'Built' DOHC EJ25 (a great machine!)

I have a KUAT four bike tray and it fits but one of the trays rubs the spare wheel a bit when folded up. Not a big deal.
I like the idea of raising it up as you totally can not see the tail lights or license plate. _________________ 84 Westy Syncro- 3.3L SVX stage 2 tune, subaru gears 6speed with tbd, front locker, porche brakes x4, aux tank, radflo susp |

I can carry three more rotopax cans, if I needed to. You can also carry or stuff a lot of stuff in the box and it can swing out without touching the bike rack. I can have access to the hatch by swinging out the tire carrier and the galley box made by aluminess. The Thule T2 had to be custom fitted by extending out and going up, the fab costed about $100 for the material and fab work.
I thought long and hard to make this work and I think I kind of nailed it for my needs. The inside remains clutter free and I'm able to carry 2-3 bikes and my Honda silent generator in the box with many other things. And when I'm not carrying the bikes it folds up nicely. |

The RMW swing out tire rack does not get in the way of the Yakima bike rack that I use. I only carry two bikes
max but the rack can carry four.
Now I am looking to get the RMW Twin Peaks bumpers, I think that the rear bumper could set the bike rack
further from the rear than does my stock bumper and GW hitch. If someone can post what the set-back and
drop is for the RMW bumper, I can do the same for the original to compare. Also I think the way the RMW bumper
is attached to the frame it makes carrying more bikes possible.

I have the RMW bumper and RMW swing tire, with a hitch mounted Thule 5-bike carrier, no problem at all (even have a Trasharoo mounted in the spare tire). Will take a picture and post it later. _________________ 87 Syncro Westy EJ25 ("Tardis")

Though I don't have the particular bike rack you request, I can measure the wheel to the hatch. |
That would be very cool! _________________ sold -> '85 Wolfsburg Syncro / 'Built' DOHC EJ25 (a great machine!)

As promised, below are some pictures of a RMW bumper and tire carrier with a 5-bike Thule rack. I bought the rack couple of years ago and cannot remember the exact model, but I think is similar to the Vertex 5 http://www.rei.com/product/832029/thule-vertex-5-bike-hitch-rack available at REI.
I think the combination of the RMW bumper and this bike rack is awesome.

Here's a better pic of the Yakima straight on without a bike attached.
Here's a pic of a measurement. The tire cover didn't fit so well and was replaced with one that does.
The measurement is at the point where the arrow is on the hatch, not the indentation above it.
The other arrow is pointing to the edge of the tire and not the bike rack. This is a rough estimate as I'm
sure your tires may vary in size.
