Every year the Arizona Bus Club restores and raffles off a pre-67 split window bus and this year is no exception. We have begun working on this years bus and boy is it a beauty...a 1966 Sundial camper bus which is a really dry Arizona bus that left the factory as a Kombi and was converted by the Sundial Company when new and this baby even has the coveted side tent.
Our little story of this 1966 Kombi turned Sundial starts last year while we were still thrashing on JJ 2013's raffle bus...one day our devoted president of the Arizona Bus Club, Gary Lampenin, was sampling one of his many fine Bavarian beverage vintages and tinkering with something super important when there was a knock on his door (door bell is probably broken) and a nice gentleman asked if the 7 VW buses parked out front of the house were his. Gary reluctantly said "uh, yes...why?" and the man said "well I live just down the street and I've got one I don't need...you interested in it?". Well of course Gary assumed it would be another baywindow towed back to his front yard but much to his surprise it was this glorious 1966 Sundial for an extremely fair price considering today's market....
Anyway...Gary was humble enough to do the right thing and offer it up as this years raffle bus. Wouldn't we all love to be the lucky $.50 raffle ticket holder on Sunday September 21st, 2014?
Feeling energetic and want to help work on what could be your new bus? Well visit our website for details on the work parties near Phoenix, Arizona.

A few weeks ago we started tearing into the bus by stripping it down and cataloging what is needed. Not much for rust but she sure has quite a few dings and a little banged up but nothing the ABC crew can't handle.

Congratulations to the ABC for doing this each year as a fund-raiser, for refreshing an old Bus to be back on the road again, and for giving some lucky event participant an incredible door prize that they can drive home for a super-cheap ticket cost!
A great Club with a great bunch of enthusiasts!
I hope to get to finally attend the Jerome event (first time for me) in 2014, and yes, I'll be buying a wad of those tickets too...

Looking awesome as usual. To win a bus I think would draw people from all over the world. If I can I sure will try to make it. I am in Thailand right now. I am feeling lucky! |

The Arizona Bus Club has been busy. This past weekend we had a raffle bus thrash party campout and it was a great turnout with lots of things getting cleaned, scrubbed, cut out, welded in, beat in and pulled out. Thanks to all who came out and helped...it was 3 days of fun, food, friends, firepits and funky green panels.

The Arizona Bus Club has been busy since the work party campout weekend 2-weeks ago. We've been hitting mostly Sundays and a couple weeknights since our project manager and host of the work parties Chad has to work the next few Saturdays.
This poor bus must have been used as a catchers backstop in the PO's backyard for the last couple of decades judging by all the crazy little dents and dings everywhere but we are proud to say the roof and entire drivers side is now massaged strait, glazed with filler and ready for some long board sanding. Both front floors are replaced and the nose is now 90% dent free. A couple of hacked firewall holes are patched and the drivers side rear hatch gusset has been replaced.
We would like to say a great big THANK YOU to everyone that has donated parts, cash and/or labor for this years bus. Without these very gracious donations we would not be able to present such a nice restored bus for the Jerome Jamboree raffle prize. This is the only VW show in the galaxy where a restored split window bus is being raffled off for only $0.50 a ticket and it would not be possible without the support of these contributors. Please be sure to patronize these businesses and tell them thanks for the support of our great hobby and for donating to what could very possibly be your new bus.
Wolfsburg West sent us two giant boxes filled with a bunch of smaller boxes packed full of nearly every part we needed on our list that they offer in their catalog...OMG how awesome is that? These guys reproduce and source the finest replacement parts on the planet for our beloved buses and have donated mucho parts for as many of the raffle buses that Chad can remember.
THANK YOU WOLFSBURG WEST!
Sewfine Interiors is sending us all the quality seat covers, padding and curtains for this years bus just as they have done for the last several years. We cannot thank you enough for this as the upholstery is where much of the intimate time the lucky winner spends for many years to come.
THANK YOU SEWFINE!
Klassicfab just sent us the battery tray, right rear tall corner and a complete right rear fender from the cargo doors back. These guys reproduce the largest selection and most correctly made metal repair panels available and are making nearly enough to completely build a bus from scratch.
THANK YOU KLASSICFAB!
Everybody likes pictures...so here you go.
Don'tcha just love it when a pile of those white boxes with blue letters show up at your garage? And new bumpers too!
And who doesn't like a little Funky Green?
Drivers floor:
This corner was bashed and bent...several hours of hammer and dollys smoothed it out.
A few more of the Work Party Campout...we make sure to have fun while we work...and sometimes we have to work on our own buses...broken clutch cable on Greg's double bubble.
Engine compartment cleaned up nice...only two hacked holes and a fungled hatch gusset to fix on the drivers side.
Whoever shows up late to the next work party gets to dive in here for some scraping and scrubbing.
This poor deck lid took a beating but after some straitening and fabbing a couple repair sections for the bracing channels it'll be good as new.
The next major metalwork on our agenda is this gnarly area...it had over an inch thick of bondo smeared over much of the fender. We beat on it and got most of the carnage out but opted to get a Klassicfab replacement panel to do it right. This will allow us to straiten out the fender tub behind alot better too.

Hey Bill!
The bus club took a vote and have elected you as this years raffle bus pilot to the Jerome Jamboree XIV. We will be sending you the drivers door handle shortly so you can lick it and mail it back securing your ride.
By the way...this years bus is a camper so you've got somewhere to sleep until the winner is picked Sunday morning...hopefully you don't soil it too much with your wet dreaming
Yes, Jim is rebuilding the engine this year just as he has done for many in the past. I think it had a 1600 dual port but if I know Jim he'll be doing one of his 1776 single port mountain climbers for this one...TBD...??? _________________ 1979 Type-2 Westfalia “Sandy”
