oasis, isn't that the very first picture in this thread back on the top of page 1 ?
How is it that you hadn't seen that one before? |
Hahahaha, so it is.
Hey, back in 2005, I was gearing up my '71 Super to being a German Looker. Quite honestly, I really didn't come to theSamba too much back then. I found a lot folks on the Later Model Bug forum to be snooty against Super Beetles, Type IV engines, German Look in general, and anything not bone stock (although I'm still amused how "stock" cars can be modified many times over but still be "stock") or slammed to the pebbles. I simply wanted a Bug that could perform.
Later, I found out at another site what contentiousness really was. To this day, I have no idea what sparked all of the venom.
At any rate, I do tend to go to unread posts rather than go back to the beginning. My lack of patience sometimes extends to when I'm doing searches. If a thread has a lot of pages, I might try to potshot my way around looking for the info, but I won't kill myself over it. That has gotten me into trouble, too. _________________ Now: 2003 New Beetle Turbo S / 1990 Single Cab Transporter / 2014 Tiguan R-Line 4motion / 2013 Tiguan S / 2002 Golf GLS TDI

This Thing had been in a garage for 10+ years. Not sure who dismantled it or why. A friend of my sons bought it in its current state and traded it to him. I then traded my project for it. Can't wait to get it home and start working on it. |

Shortening a VW pan is easy.... To lengthen it is a much more complex project. |
K-man, Why do you say that? It's like lengthening a limo. The body would have to be cut, like the frame, and additional strengthening could be done. Either the wheels would be free floating or a PTO could be hooked up to create a second driven axle.
Maybe install a 2.7 T-4 and an extra axle, could be fun, but needs skillful planning. _________________ L'audace! L'audace! Toujours l'audace! |

I feel I need to point out that the body on this is stock length. The wheelbase is also stock from front to far rear wheels. The extra wheels were installed in front of the stock rear wheels. The running gear is stock 1600dp and 4 speed with power going to the far rear wheels. |

That is interesting they left the full size pan and just shortened the body. How does the front set of rear tires attach? |

The pan in the pic is not the original pan. It is a Ghia pan that will be modified to accommodate the 3rd axle. Also, the body has not been shortened. It is stock length. They just modified the rear doors to extend the rear wheel wells forward. I will be using a modified torsion type trailer axle for the center wheels. |

I was thinking that this had a rabbit tag axle with wide 5 wheels. Been a long time, 1993? |

Unfortunately I do not have the original chassis or suspension. Really wish I did, it would make this build a lot easier. Any pictures anybody might have would also be a big help. The only one I have of it complete is the one at the beginning of this thread. |

Was chatting with this fellow on FB, anybody ever find any more photos to assist him with his restoration?
It almost looks like the back rear wheels were "stock" with maybe a solid axle for the 2nd set (the forward) rear wheels.
Best I can tell from the before photo and the one with it sitting on the trailer, minus the rear wheels.
