|
This engraving is actually based on a photo that I took back in March of 2009. Bud and I drove our dune buggies down to Wilmington's waterfront, along the edge of the Cape Fear River, in hopes of getting some nice shots. We were very pleased with this one; featuring Bud's Meyers Manx next to an old mooring bollard. Custom framing by the Frame Game of Jacksonville, NC; aluminum frame dimension is 18” x 24”, double matted with both black and teal (attempt to closely match the dune buggy’s body color).

Very nice! Does he use a mix of media on his pieces or is it all tool work on the metal?
Thanks for sharing! _________________ Or you can call me………Tim

Hi RedBaronofRedBud,
I actually created that artwork for Bud; thank you for the compliment. I use a combination of metal punches, various Drexel tool bits, different grits of Scotch Brief pads, and a vibrating metal engraver. _________________ Gary David Holbrook

Looks like it was painted with a live chicken, polished with a brick and buffed with a pine cone |

Gary, my apologies for not realizing that its your work! Very cool how you use the scotch brite to get the subtle changes and shading effect!
Reminds me of the black scratch board I used years ago for art class, but more industrial. Very coo!! _________________ Or you can call me………Tim

The picture of the art work grossly understates the detail in this piece of art. Next nice sunny weekend day Gary is going to take some close-up photos of the detail. Everything that you see in the photograph has been reproduced in the etching (including the surfer dude beer tape handle mounted on the storage box of my buggy). I am very lucky to have such a talented friend _________________ Bud (1Madmanx)

Beautiful art work Gary! You are a patient man.
Bud, any idea where you will hang it? In the house or garage? |

John, good to hear from you. Hope you are doing well.
Gary did a fantastic job on this piece. It is definitely going in the house - trying to figure out if it's going to be the living room or my wall of fame in my office

Good to hear from you too Bud! The engraving definitely should get a place of honor inside. |

Thank you for the compliments, guys, I really do appreciate it. MOON BUGGY, I should have responded to your question much earlier, but its really hard to pin down just how much time it took to complete that project. I do know that I started on it just after this year's Manx on the Banx; finishing it near the end of December. I can't (or I should say that I don't) work on it too long during each sitting; there are times that I feel the tendency to rush or not be as detailed as I want to be. _________________ Gary David Holbrook

That is exactly how I feel when I am building my Buggy's.
I often thought that same thing when watching American Choppers and Paul Sr. would be bitch'n at Paul Jr. about why he did not get done faster.
You work is very nice Gary. I am glad I got to see it in person. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Thanks Vince, I truly appreciate the compliment.
Here is a slightly better photo of my first dune buggy engraving that bigtonkakid posted above.
From left to right: John Marcinka, Keith Dusharme (high bidder), Bruce Meyers (creator of the original Meyers Manx dune buggy), Gary Holbrook (artist). I felt extremely privileged to have my metal Manx artwork including in the silent auction that was held at the 2013 Manx on the Banx. Keith’s high bid of $600.00 was much more that I could have even imagined. Bruce was even kind enough to sign the project before it was reassembled behind glass. John and Keith both put tons of miles on their dune buggy before the event even started, driving from NY to CA to meet up with the Sea to Sea Safari crowd, and then joining them on their trek across the USA to the OBX. Framework by the Frame Game, Jacksonville, NC.
