the box is a trw new box . trw is casted in it
first i made a cardboard template of the box and all the holes . i use poster board. i put it up on the frame and slide 2 bolts that lined up and marked the center hole so i could open it up
i used my die grinder to open the hole . its not a whole lot bigger than what is already there. did not take long at all. then i drilled out the spot welds that held in the tube inside the frame for the hole furthest toward the rear
then i pried the tube out.
next i took the template i made and marked where the rear hole needs to be and used my die grinder to slot out the og hole to the new one
both sides
i put the box up in there but the top rear hole was off just a tiny bit so i used my angle drill to clean the hole out
i put the tube back inside the frame after i sanded off the spotwelds on it and slid all th bolts in the box to line the tube up
pulled the rear bolt out so i could tack the tube in
welded up!
painted the frame up and bolted the box in. i replaced the rag joint as well. the pitman arm for this box has a bigger splined hole as well the nut is larger . i bought a used pitman arm from a 74-later bus . he gave me the nut and a thin flat washer that you bend around the pitman arm and the nut to keep it from backing off. both the rag joint and the drag link bolted right up. works great . not as good as the cavalier rack i put in my split bus but this was vary easy and youll have a new box you can count on

Great how to, on the indefinite future, unless someone starts repopping 68-71 boxes, glad I have a spare...

As I haven't updated for months i thought i should now, as i'm working on it again.
The steering box has been a major problem which failed the mot.
To carry on from my post in technical section i decided i should put it build thread.
I've nearly cracked it with the late steering box conversion, quite easy to do as well.
Here are some photo's, enjoy 
The 2 boxes
The chassis rail where it needs to mount, marked for larger hole.
Template i made
Hole cut.
Used a worn disc and a full size to get into the tight space.
The hole that needs to be drilled is on the edge of this sleeve, so i drilled the 4 dimple and drill a hole in the bottom of the chassis rail. I then put a punch through the bottom hole and tapped the sleeve out, easy.
I can reuse this sleeve when i drill the other hole then weld it.
Box sort of fitted 
The hole on the other side needs opening up as the box doesn't go all the way through.
After i open the hole up i will see what i need to do here.
Right thats all for now if i can i will finish it tomorrow, but i have another problem in that i need to find a arm that the drag link connects to. The box didn't come with one.
As no one is really interested in my house i'll tell you lot, i have done it!!!
The late box fits i managed to finally get an hour on it this evening, here are a couple of pics.
yes i know the hole isn't central, those hole saw cutters are tricky without a proper pilot hole.
The dirty great big hole behind isn't to make it fit, it was rusty and also a failure on the mot.
When i remove the box to clean it i'll get a pic of what i had to cut, its the bit of the valance above the big hole that curves up.[/url] |

| Oh yea ...forgot about this. When the box goes in, it touches the front of the bus. I took my hammer and carefully tapped this area foward.right in the corner. When your there youll see what i mean! Its not alot and you dont need to cut anything .i hit it with a bunch of lighter taps to keepit smooth. You really cant tell that it didnt come like that |

| How is the replacement working out? I have a 68’ bay with a “E” box that is no longer rebuildable. Any suggestions would be appreciated. |

if the worm gear is badly worn then it is not rebuildable unless you find a replacement wormgear. New pegs are available again from the UK. Here is a rebuilt one that looks interesting. Read the seller feedback. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2274930

As a gift, Tom Powell purchased one of those $100 pegs for me from Europe. It didn’t fit. Tom sent it back.
