This thing came off of the crankcase out of the hole shown. I'm not quite sure what it is. Can anyone help me out? Sorry for the bad quality pictures

Thanks for the speedy response. So in other words, it does not need to go back in. |

But some detail oriented restorers may need it for cosmetic reasons, don't toss it out just yet. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I'm fairly sure it'll only come out towards the flywheel side, you have to pound on the end with the wire to remove it, usually requires breaking the black cone shaped plastic part off first. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

And leaves you with a hole to plug if you don't want things to get blown or accidently dropped into the area between the flywheel and case. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

... unless any of you bus drivers out there with the T IV engine and the TDC sensor removed work on your bus standing on its nose, or you drive in reverse very very fast with the engine cover open, I can't see how having the opening unplugged would cause an issue. _________________ I Corinthians 4: 1 thru 5

I would think most if taking a poll would recommend plugging the hole if you removed this item. Better safe than sorry. And if you seen all the nuts, washers, screws, sockets I've found toward the back area of the engine you would make sure it was plugged. _________________ Special Thanks to:

Boy, did this thread go to hell in a hand basket
BUSBOSS asked how to remove the TDC sensor. He didn't ask how to ruin it.
I posted how to remove it without cutting the wire, or breaking the black plastic end.
You have to remove the flywheel in order to drive it back out of the case
but, I have also seen where twisting the plastic end back and forth will sometimes work also.
In either case removing the 'sensor' leaves a hole approx: 9mm or if you also remove the Brass insert that the sensor sits in you can get a plastic plug to fit the hole.
I do have pictures posted in my gallery. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

Well that isn't like any of the ones I've ever encountered, or are you leaving the steel insert in the case and just driving out the guts? If that's the case I wasn't aware they came apart in a civilised and reuseable manner.
All the ones I've dealt with had a flange on the flywheel side that was larger than the hole in the case, there's no F'n way you'll dive that through towards the rear without breaking off the bellhousing flange first.
BTW VW Canada had a plastic plug that filled that hole when a universal case was used for an earlier model build, I'll try to find one for a pic. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
