I'd like to get my case halves to look like this:
I took my case halves to a tranny shop with a parts washer and it came out ok but nowhere near like the picture above.
I then took them to a local VW machine shop and they said their tank wouldn't get it much cleaner so they didn't waste my time or money.
If any of you have tanked your case as pictured, do you have any details about the tank process or solution used so I can call around and try to locate a local shop that has what I'm looking for?
I've read the existing two threads on this topic with no luck. Any final determination on whether our fan shrouds can withstand the same process?
Thanks! _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

mine went thru a local parts washer at Del's machine shop. Other than a couple of areas they scrubbed with a wire brush and pick they did a fine job. $40.

I would suggest calling around to local machine shops. I usually have to find that odd business that just knows how to do it right.
And to add- damn Steve that's one flashy case!! You could eat off that baby.. _________________ Special Thanks to:

I'll call Del's and see what they use.
Any before pics?
I want to see if it's the condition of my case or the cleaning process. Thanks! _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

no before photos of that case but I assure you it was nasty. RIMCO bathed it when they had it and it didn't clean up very well for them. Del's did a really good job. I figured they were charging me just to toss it in their washer but they actually assigned a guy to it who cleaned it. Meaning he worked on the spots that were bad. I tried solvent and dishwasher at home as well as the pressure washer and hot water but couldn't get it myself so I gave Del's a shot as my Acura guy said they did good work. They do. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Seriously on this one. Order some powdered aluminum soap (also called aluminum brightener) and run the case in your dishwasher with the soap. That is essentially what a machine shop's part washer is, a giant dishwasher. We have one at our shop and use 2 different soaps for magnesium cases and aluminum cases. On a hunch I took some of the aluminum soap home and tried it on a grimy head in the dishwasher and it came out looking better than new. If there are any thick hardened grease areas mixed with dirt, you have to knock those off with a screwdriver first as even a machine shop parts washer will not get those off. The only problem with this plan is finding a dishwasher to use (if your SO won't let you use theirs). I happened to buy a broken one off craigslist and fixed it with a $50 part and stuck it in my basement. _________________ air-cooled or nothing for me

FYI - the caustics can play havoc with the seals in consumer dishwashers. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Thanks for the heads up. Maybe I'll look for a cheap used one on CL. _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin |

You can often find them roadside for free but an older one from CL would be good as well, I run one now and then when I'm building multiple engines with Simple green in it (preferrably the non foaming stuff), remove the power wire to the clock in the timer so it runs all day and never goes into drain mode.
I did learn to never use the citrus based degreasers in them, although it worked awesome the rubber parts swelled up and cracked in a few days and it peed itself all over the shop. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I would never run a case in a dishwasher in my own home or any unit where plates, utensils would be used for food consumption.
Never mind that I've never seen a dishwasher project come out as clean as the picture in my original post. _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

I built a hot tank and used it on an aluminum intake once. It came out that clean. I used KOH (Potassium Hydroxide) and hot water. NaOH (sodium Hydroxide does the same thing.
I would soak it in the barrel for about 5 minutes, then use a toilet brush on it for a bit, and soak again. After several times, rinsed with clear water from my pressure washer.
Sprayed with some aluminum brightener I bought from NAPA called Robbies or something like that. Looks brand new.
KOH is aggressive, so you can't over do it, and it has to be neutralized for sure...
Oh yeah, the fumes will harm you. _________________ ACME Cruiser Sand Rail, 1776, Combo spindles,

Do you ever eat in a restaurant? If you do, the next time you're in one, look around. The fork you're putting in your mouth, may have been in that other guy's mouth five minutes earlier. You know, the guy that's coughing his head off or has a big open sore on his face. You're way more likely to catch something from another human than you are from a greasy engine part. Just sayin'. _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote." - Benjamin Franklin |
