I installed a 2 1/16" VDO brand OAT (outside air temt).$60+/-. I mounted the probe between the headlights, but behind the grill. I wanted the probe;1. high up off the hot asphalt,2. in front of radiator, and 3, out of the sun.
City traffic, going slow (granny gear slow), and the rad fan coming on all affect the temp reading. It's great going down the highway, 'though.
My ultimate plan is to run two more probes. One in the front heater, and one in the a/c duct. then wire all three of them to a rotary switch, then to the gauge. Reefer too if you want.

Let's go break something!

I put my indoor/outdoor thermometer into the seat heater switch location on the top of the steering column. It looks "factory" there. Best of all... the thermometer was less than $2 and had free shipping from Singapore.

This is exactly what I was planning to do. Care to share the part number and source for the thermometer? My column plastic needs replacing and I was going to buy the seat heat version as soon as I sorted the thermometer.

I installed my outdoor temp readout in the form of a self-dimming rear view mirror, which also includes a compass. The temp probe sits in the right front, just behind the lip spoiler. It appears to read dead-nuts accurate at speed or sitting.

I need to take more pics, so I'm not constantly whoring this one

I saw a whole bunch either on ebay or amazon. I looked into that setup for mine but my scan gauge sits right there.

Thanks!
I am hesitated since i also thought about putting there, in the upper steering cover, the cruise control switch of the Gowesty kit.

I also have all the heating seat kit, but i believe it's not that worthy to install since the vanagon is always in storage during the winter.

Or the outside temperature gauge has said, or the cruise control switch.

Thanks for your ideas

Has anybody found a "stock appearing" OAT that can be wired to the dash lights?

Too many of the cheapo ones die in Vegas heat when parked. I went to this one which can survive the heat, but I can't see it at night.

Got my $10 Radio Shack thermometer installed yesterday. Suppose to be -11 in a day or so, we'll see how well it works?

Fished some bailing wire thru the speedo hole and pulled the probe thru.
Not sure where to mount the probe...

This is the thermometer I used

Thanks !
Grat to share the thermometer you have use.
It make a week that i try to find the correct fit for the hole which is 25 mm x 40 mm.
With this one, in inches, 1" x 1.75" i believe you have adjusted or the hole or the thermometer casing, since 1.75 is a bit more than 40 mm ?

Thanks again.

Yes you have to do a minor enlargement of the hole. I carefully used a multi tood and a file.

I love 71 bug guy's idea for placement, and I had plenty of options to choose from on EBay.

I wanted something I could see at night, ideally a backlit LCD that would be wired into the dash lites . . . . no such luck.

I got the cover from VanCafe, and I went with a blue LCD version display off Ebay:

Wired to come on when the key is "on." Also in red and green, and degrees C, I believe. Also has a clock (with battery backup) and voltmeter. I only use the temp.

I put the temp probe in the fresh air intake using an exisiting hole in the bulkhead behind the dash:

I used the same clock/thermometer/volt meter but sourced mine from amazon. I also put it in the location of the original clock as it no longer worked.

I am really happy with the install and I do use mine for the clock and volt meter (I tied it in behind the fuse panel. The power comes from the Gowesty radio switch so it also comes on when I flip the switch to have the radio on with no keys.

What did you wrap your probe in? For weatherproofing? I assume it doesn't affect temp reading?

The photo is misleading, the probe isn't wrapped. I used a small block of foil faced foam insulation (appx 1" x 1"x 3") between the grille and the probe to isolate it from the black grille. The foils faces out. I live in Las Vegas area; getting a reading that isn't affected from contact with surfaces warmed from being parked in the sun was my goal. The surface of the probe is open to free air otherwise.

The picasa link shows more details of installation.

FWIW I once recorded 160F in a black car (mine) parked all day in the sun. A good tint job took that down to 120F!

Great ideas here! Does anyone have the late model steering column cover with the factory hole in it? PM me if you want to sell one.
