Once I pull the starter and test it... assuming I cannot get it to turn over... I will probably test the local parts places to find a remanufactured one. I was told by asiab3 that going with the automatic starter will save me some grief in the future... Not having to worry about the bushing. _________________ 1968 Deluxe Bay, currently being restored |

Hey bud, if no one has mentioned it you need to keep looking for the title. The title you posted a pic of is for a Type 3 from 1969...likely that squareback sitting next to your Bus. Notice how the vin number starts with a "3"??
Good luck man, looks like you have your hands full. _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.

Yea... I was wondering why there was a discrepancy in the year... I wasn't aware that the first number in the VIN indicated vehicle type.
If I remember correctly, there are a couple more Volkswagen titles in the folder... There are at least 80 titles for cars grandpa used to own. Some real beauties... There was a '66 21 window bus he had that was just beautiful. I actually got to drive that one back in 2000. He put it in storage and didn't pay the storage facility bill.
Crying shame....
Anyway, I'll look back through that folder and try to find the real title. Thanks. _________________ 1968 Deluxe Bay, currently being restored |

Agreed, get that title before buying any parts.
That starter won't work for your bus, good deal but it's 76 and later. And don't get any ideas about testing that starter you have, running a VW starter out of the bellhousing F's it up as the shaft isn't supported. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Copy that, thanks busdaddy.
Yea, I know the bus is a '68, for sure... But there's no telling what year tranny this thing has, and I'm pretty sure the engine is a '71.
And yea... I've got a task ahead of me here. =) _________________ 1968 Deluxe Bay, currently being restored |

I have a Type 1 starter you can have for free. I'm near I-25 and Alameda. PM me or call/text me 303-842-7951. Also interested in buying the Squareback if you are interested in selling it. Maybe we could work a trade for getting your Bus running??

Also, your bus is a hyper-rare color called "Arizona Yellow" look it up.
I'm about 3 blocks away from Painter's Grinding. _________________ All your Buses are belong to us.

Arizona Yellow=Yikes!!!!!! Guess I won't be able to get it repainted the original color!
And BTW, my son and I go fishing at Huston Park Lake at least once a week... Vallejo and Ohio. Right down the street.
***See my post about bus height... I wonder if we could get the thing into my little garage to work on it... _________________ 1968 Deluxe Bay, currently being restored |

Hey Ian... I sent you a PM.
The Type 3 you see in the pic is a 1969 Fastback with Autostick.
I have NO idea if they're worth anything, or if this one is even worth restoring. It's in pretty rough shape.
Anyway, we could come up with a number or we could talk service trade. Check the PMs... I sent you a bunch of junky pix. _________________ 1968 Deluxe Bay, currently being restored |

Got in the bus today to take inventory on WHAT EXACTLY IS IN THERE... found some surprising things... stuff I didn't think I had AND stuff I THOUGHT I had, but wasn't there. Here are some pix.
Info stamp
Passenger side bucket seat
Behind the passenger bucket
Behind the driver-side bucket
A SEAT!!!! (bottom of the seat portion)
The back of the seat!!! (upholstered side of the seat BACK)
Some paneling
So... At least I HAVE much of the paneling I thought was GONE from the interior... although it is very dirty and dusty, I will try to clean it up and re-install.
And it looks like.... I have a middle bench seat? _________________ 1968 Deluxe Bay, currently being restored |

On your fuel tank, make sure to order a new tank strainer and the sealing ring. Wolfsburg West part # "Filter in tank" is 111209147A. Sealing ring is
111209139. Other vendors may call these parts something different and may have different part #'s but you do want a new tank filter in there. The fuel line filter should be placed between the tank outlet and the metal line that goes into the engine compartment. See WW's website or maybe BusDepot for these parts. They are both reputable online vendors. So is GermanSupply in Toronto and Aircooled.net. I don't recall where Aircooled.net is located.
The condition of the interior of the tank is probably not good. Once you get the tank outlet off you may wanna put a big pan under the tank and pour some gas into the Bus to get the crap at the bottom of the tank to run out. Just a suggestion, but ideally the tank should come out and get cleaned out real good. BUT, hopefully the tank was bone dry when it got parked 15 years ago and your tank issues may not be that bad after all.
By the way that old '69 Fastback was a great little VW back in the day. They were really quick. One of the gals I dated in high school drove one (her parents' car), this was like in '73. If that '69 pictured still has the intakes, carbs and linkage on the engine along with the air cleaner and other pertinent engine parts you could post them in Classifieds and make some $ off of that. Those old Solex carbs on there could be re-built and make someone happy. $ in your wallet to offset the cost of what you'll be spending on your Bus _________________ '66 Beetle

Thanks guys...
And looking at it again, it is most probably the far back seat... DAMN!
After I get all the paneling cleaned and reinstalled, I think the only thing I'll be lacking is the driver's side door panel... Are those hard to find in black with the silver trim?
On the fastback, I'm hoping to come up with some sort of arrangement with Ian... The bus needs work... Work I'd be HAPPY to do, but lack some of the know-how and parts sources. Plus, I drove by his shop yesterday. It's literally 2 blocks east and 2 blocks north of my house here.... I could walk there in 3.5 minutes. Just about the perfect situation. _________________ 1968 Deluxe Bay, currently being restored |

Should be able to start restoration work on the bus this weekend... Now that I have correct title and a place to work on it, I will start by cleaning the vehicle from top to bottom to see what I have to work with. I am going to try to reinstall all interior paneling and deep clean the carpets. I may end up replacing the carpets, but for now I will at least clean them to determine salvagability.
I am going to need a new windshield and windshield seat... The metal there has rusted slightly.
Guess Ill need to order the metal strip... Can most glass places come up with (or fabricate) the proper windshield? Or will that need to be special ordered as well? When I put a new windshield in my Explorer, that was easy for the glass company... A bus windshield... That I do not know. Thanks in advance. _________________ 1968 Deluxe Bay, currently being restored |

If you want a lot of info to answer those questions just Samba search for "windshield". It has been discussed in detail quite a few times already. _________________ 71 Superbug

Thanks, I will do that. On my kindle now, however, and most browsing features are a pain to mess with. Perhaps I was just thinking "out loud" (so to speak) about the upcoming project and asked a question in my stream-of-consciousness thought process.
Thanks for the advice, and I will strive to do full research before asking questions in the future. _________________ 1968 Deluxe Bay, currently being restored |

Ian doesn't have an open bay at his shop until this weekend. We are going to try to get the bus to his shop either Sunday or Monday. Once there, we will be able to speak more definitively on the state of affairs.
I'll take a look at the clutch components, state of the engine, we'll tear out the carpet and take some pictures. _________________ 1968 Deluxe Bay, currently being restored |
