Is that on the Westfalia tag? What is the build date of the bus?

thats awesome…just over 500 apart. similar m codes as well. does/did yours have a heater installed? mine does, and i thought that may explain the 544 code.

Bus is still in the woods, do not remember a heater.

With almost 1,000 dealers in the US alone in 1967 plus distribution outside the US it must have been very hard to get a Westfalia for any of them. Roughly 525 units produced a month in 1967, VW must have used the Westfalia as a bargaining chip forcing the dealers to order additional 'less-desirable' models with each Westfalia.

Here is a much later SO 42 from 1965 which pushes the Fabrik series for 1965 a bit later than what's listed on www.so-42.com:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

That would change the figures slightly:

1965: Fabrik Nr. 1-2200 (about 2200 produced)
1966: Fabrik Nr. 2200-6300 (about 4100 produced)
1967: Fabrik Nr. 6300-12700 (about 6400 produced)

Also updated in my original post. I'll continue to update these figures as other Fabrik Nr. numbers are found to help further define SO 42 production.

Another very late SO 42 for the 1966 year production (Fabrik-Nr. 6820) has been found:

This pushes 66 production back a bit further then previously known. Updated numbers:

1965: Fabrik Nr. 1-2200 (about 2200 produced)
1966: Fabrik Nr. 2200-6900 (about 4700 produced)
1967: Fabrik Nr. 6900-12700 (about 5800 produced)

This is assuming they started the number sequence with 0001. They could have started with 1000.

Yep, a number of assumptions were used here including if the numbers were sequential. It's the best we can do without any factory records to go by. We do know of some below 1000 but the lowest I've seen is 666 so maybe they started at 500 or some other number.

To add to the confusion the bus kit above (Fabrik-Nr. 6820) is actually in an early production 67 SO 42 (August 66 build). So it appears Westfalia had some left over kits from 66 production that were included in early 67 campers.

Since nothing in the kits really changed other than the handles and table legs a bus made in 66 with a kit made in 66 doesn't sound odd to me at all.

Only odd in that I hadn't seen a camper before that had a Fabrik-Nr. that didn't match the production year. From what I've seen, Westfalia used pretty much whatever they had laying around so this just further confirms that.

My 67 has a production date of 1/3/67 (pretty much right in the middle of the model year) but still came with the early cabinet handles (Fabrik-Nr. 8872).

According to the birth certificate for my 65 SO 42, it left the Westfalia factory on February 25, 1965. The fabrik # is 22.

That's really cool, thanks for posting those details. So based on that it's a good assumption they started close to 0001. If you don't mind, post a pic of your Fabrik plate since it's the lowest known example for an SO 42.

That is AWESOME! The lowest numbered plate for an SO-42 I've ever seen. Very cool, now can anyone beat that? And in the other direction, who's got a SO-42 with a plate into July of 1967?

Bill

I think Bugcollections old Westy (Fabrik-Nr. 666) had them and maybe one other one (Bill Bowmans?).

I was digging through some spares and came across this tag- cannot recall where I even got this one. Must have been from a parted out early Westy years ago. I feel guilty owning it- hope I didn't contribute to its demise

Thanks for posting that, definitely helps document the production numbers. Hopefully your weather gets better and you can get the bus out of hibernation.
