Should a new shock extend on its own ?

I just ordered some Sachs stock front shocks for my tin top syncro from one of the vendors. They do not extended when compressed by hand. Is this normal ? I know the OME's I have in the rear extend on their own but they are also nitrogen charged. Just curious.

gas charged shocks will usually extend on their own, oil shocks will not.

I believe only the gas charged shocks should extend. Regular oil shocks do not.

Correct.
The sachs oil shocks will not spring out on their own.
This adds an element of fun to the installation of them on the front of a syncro.....: )

yeah as others have said, the pressure of the gas will stretch the damper
