i have been wanting to install bumper guards on my 75auto

after putting together a set, i was getting ready to cut a notch in them for the deluxe rubber trim, using the champagne edtion bumper guards off my 76westy as a templet for cutting the notch

but i just learned that deluxe bumper guards and regular bumper guards
are not the same !!!!

so once i had the champagne bumper gaurds side by side with regular bumper guards i noticed that champagne bumper guards do not
clear the entire depth of bumper
and that regular guards do clear the depth of bumper

the bumper guards are the same overall size but distance that they inset into the bumper is different

the problem is that if i cut a notch in bumper guards to clear the deluxe trim
the trim will be all the way upto the front edge of bumper guard

and so now i have been on the fence for a few months
debating with myself on taking the risk in cutting a notch anyway and hope that it wont look to bad
or hunt down a set of champagne /deluxe guards to put on

lets be realistic here
regular bumper guards are rare and hard to find, if i cut a notch in them and it looks like shit it will be a big $$loss plus the world will lose another set of bumper gaurds

finding a set of deluxe bumper gauards can take years...
(it took 3 years to find them for my 76westy)

not using the deluxe rubber trim is not a option

i have done a lot of searching in threads and in the gallery and it seems like up to now noone has noticed that there is a differance between
73-79 bumper guards
deluxe bumper guards (notch for rubber trim)
and champagne bumper gaurds (chrome +notch)

There has been a whole set of champagne bumper guards in the classifieds for months now. I know because I too have been looking for some. they are like 500 beans though and I want to paint the set I find, and the ones in the classifieds are too pretty to do that to. Maybe snag those and sell the ones you've got to diffuse the cost? I know someone who'll buy them! Laughing

Side note: Seriously, why won't anyone re-pop these? They remade the readily available 68-73 Beetle guards, and now they've got repro bay guards for the 68-72, which is basically all you can find used anyhow. Are these part houses sleeping through class? Is there some super hard part to repro-ing the late bay bumper guards that I'm not seeing? Seems pretty basic....

these will never be repoduced
bug bumper gaurds and 68-72 bus bumper gaurds
are all the same front, rear, left or right......
1 molding gives you all 4 bumper gaurds

73-79 bus bumper gaurds are all different
front, rear, left and right
so you need to make 4 molds to sell 1 set

then a whole different set of molds for the deluxe rubber trim Laughing

making the mold to make the bumper gaurds is where the investment is
having to make 4 molds makes it just not worth investing

well that sucks. Sad
Can't some engineering whiz re-design the wheel and come up with a bumper guard that will fit all 4 corners of the late bay bumper, like the other models mentioned? Just something that's functional and looks close? Where are the original molds? THERE MUST BE A SOLUTION! Mad
When I get home I'm breakin' out the crayons and graph paper....
