I am now part of the Type3 family.
Have owned several Beetles and was recently looking for a pop top Kombi. But have always loved Squarebacks.
So last week Wayne Penrose (a VW mechanic/fanatic with race and show winning cars here in Oz) listed this Squareback from his collection (I counted about 30+ at his workshop) for sale.
Listed as absolutely Rust Free with a fresh 1776 engine. All brakes components new or reconditioned. New 009 distributor, Pertronix electronic ignition. To name a few of the listed items.
The bad was, no headliner (gave me a brand new one to put in) no carpet or door cards, needs new window rubbers and rips in seats but covered at the moment.
First on the list to do is:
Replace rubbers and do headlining while windows out.
New door cards - thinking Red
Carpet - thinking Saddle or Black
Powder coating wheels Red.
It has been registered since these pics and I will take pics over the next day or so of the interior and engine.
Anyway love that I'm now a Squareback owner and I'm sure will be posting questions on here. _________________ My 71 Squareback (Sold!): http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=591450

Congrats. That was a good catch mate. I saw it advertised and knew it wouldn't last long. _________________ Sydney, Australia.

Thanks guys for the welcome.
I got some quotes today for installation of new head liner and window rubbers, and a separate quote to do new carpet.
Then got quoted to get my wheels powder coated red.
Happy with all the quotes so will be getting these jobs done over the next month or so.
Will be getting new door cards, visors, straps, bonnet pull and belts in this time too.
Also took pics of my interior and engine today to show what needs to be done.

Yeah I agree mate.
Do you know where I can get a decent RHD Dash? |
I just sold one same as yours but there is a solution now. Uncracked originals rarely come up for sale. I bought and sold the only un-cracked one I've ever seen for sale in Aus in 18months of searching and even that wasn't absolutely perfect.
Here, some more reading material for you. Read the whole lot or skip to the end for the results.

Thanks for that info mate. I have contacted the bloke, he just needs me to send him the plastic gauge rims for him to be able to build one. I might try and find a trashed dash to pull them out of and send those.
I got some parts yesterday, all new rubbers for windows, so will be able to get the new headliner installed now.
And new door cards and panels. TMI red, plan to get matching seat covers. I'm still unsure whether to go with black or saddle coloured carpet.
My new interior trim.

Oooohhh That red with black seats would look good!
I'm liking this. I'll be following this thread. _________________ 1971 VW Squareback - My Project - My Gallery

You're missing the rubber bellows & metal oval piece to connect your air cleaner to the fresh air supply in the corner. Fuel injection rubber bellows & metal oval will work for you there too. Pretty rare to see original dual Solex's with an automatic transmission.

You also have a rare dual-carb/automatic kickdown switch, but it doesn't look to be hooked up. Connected and adjusted right, it is really handy on twisty roads to put you in the gear you want. On my '71 automatic square, and given the generally low power at low rpms, after a bit of practice I was able to shift up and down without jerking using just throttle position. It was almost as much fun as a stick once I got the hang of it. |

Thanks for that info KTPhil, Where? And how is it meant to be hooked up?
ALSO went looking for my VIN plate tonight to see what was on it. Not sure if they are in a different place on Australian made Type 3's or it was removed during a respray. I thought it was meant to be next to the hood latch? But as you can see it is not. (But just spotted the 2 small holes where it probably was left of the latch)
I did find the chassis number under the rear seat.
Any info on the vin plate other possible location would be appreciated, I did have quick look around for other locations but couldn't find.
Also in Australia (or anywhere else) is their a way to find out any build info about my particular VW using my chassis number?
After spotting the 2 small holes where vin plate should be just pulled out spare tyre hoping it was resting down there, unfortunately it wasn't but I did find my paint code sticker. Happy about that at least.

The drawing above shows two wires on one of the tabs, but only one is needed on each tab to operate the kickdown switch. Current passes from the coil hot terminal through a fuse holder, through the switch contacts, and then to the kickdown solenoid mounted on the tranny. It does not matter which wire goes on which contact-- it's just a momentary contact switch.
The adjustment shown is fine but you also have to make sure nothing is bent. You want the switch contacts to close AFTER you floor it and have begun to compress the spring. They often get bent or jammed and you may need to straighten/lube it to make the feel right.
The idea is that as you press your foot down, and open the throttles all the way, you don't yet force a downshift. Press further and your foot feels the spring pressure of this gizmo, the switch closes, and then you force a downshift. The gizmo is set up to let your foot feel full throttle before you press further still and force a downshift. The combo of a good vacuum modulator, no vacuum leaks, and a tight but lubricated throttle cable system, and your right foot does a good job of controlling what gear you are in.

Vw is at mechanic having carbs looked at, think I might have issue with flooding on right carb.
Our VW nationals is this weekend in Australia, so looking forward to going to that - hopefully in my squareback instead of my daily driver.
Hoping to find bumper overriders and "Automatic" script in the the swap meet. Plus any other goodies that tickles my fancy.
Rare day off today so went to VW supplier and picked up new rubbers for hood seal, rear door seal, bottom of rear door strip and engine seal. Plus the last of clips needed for my interior trim and a "Volkswagen" script for rear.
Also picked up a long boarder to attach to rear of car and some surf stickers as going for surf wagon theme as live a few hundred metres to the beach and all 3 kids are surfers whilst I'm a long boarder.
Long boarder
