|
|
I have purchased a few over the years (they pack it well in styrofoam and it always arrives in good shape).
As I opened the box yesterday the glass had a green tint to it-Solex Green. This was especially noticable against the white styrofoam. I even called someone so a second pair of eyes was seeing what I was seeing.
I held the strofoam up against my existing windshield and there was no green. I was just making sure I was not seeing something incorrectly.
I called the shop and they said to send them a photo of the glass.
Has anyone else run into this problem?
I know German Motorworks sells green tinted windshield glass. This would look strange/mismatched in a car that has the top down most of the times and the side curtains and convertible top are clear.

Mine is like that, but truly I only noticed it laying on the white styro foam packing. On the car I can hardly see it, I can tell it's slightly tinted but I can't really detect the green. I actually kind of like it. |

Mine is tinted a smoke grey glass not green though. I love it!
Tt is only sunny when I drive and helps take the glare off.
I don't think it will look bad at all. It is not my opinion that counts though. |

Thanks for the info guys-any photos of your cars with the green windshields?
Maybe because of the contrast between the white syrofoam pkging and the green tint it seems too much. I will fold down my old windshield from the Thing Shop also and compare it to the new one-maybe lay the new on top of the old and take photos.
There is no doubt the Thing Shop windshield is quality (even had a DOT stamp) but I am wondering if the tint would just bother me. |

You can see how the red cabinet looks slightly darker through the windshield compared to the side curtain.
It definitely shows some tint but it's not extreme or anything, and I really can't tell it's green without putting a piece of paper against it. Sorry for the poor indoor pictures, the back is up on jackstands waiting for a new engine. |

Thanks for the photos.
I tried to talk myself into it, but the glass is not for me-way too dark.
What suprised me is when I called and sent photos to the Thing Shop they advised me that this was the original like spec glass. I advised them that I had an original windshield as well as purchased 2 other windshields from them over the years and all were made from clear glass.
I even emailed photos of my current windshield and their glass and it clearly shows the difference.
They said I can return it but would have to pay shipping which is obviously a lot considering how big the package is. I would have never purchased it from them if they indicated the glass was not clear (German Motorworks has a windshield but it clearly states it is green tinted). I even suggested that they update the info on their web site so another person is not put in my situation.
Out cash...no glass! |

Makes me wonder what a regular auto glass shop would come up with, probably your best bet. I imagine they can make it need be. If your going to the trouble might as well get it the way you want it. |

That is the reason I went with the added expenses going with the Thing Shop. I figured that I have already bought two before, they fit correctly and were the right color. I guess that thought process went out the window.
Definately will have to find someone local willing to cut glass.
Thanks again for the photos. |

I had my new windshield cut from a commercial glass place. Bought the charcoal tinted glass and Love it! It cuts Glare at night, which is huge for my eyes... I don't do well with bright lights....
I don't see the green in the pics posted, nor have I ever seen a green tinted glass that was dark....
I'd guess that once it's mounted and has full light coming through/or through both sides with top down, you won't even see the green....
Pretty odd....
Keep in mind, this shot was taken with it in the shade from the garage....

At night it was just too dark and I fear I do not see people walking or biking quick enough.
Maybe it is just my old eyes and I am used to the clear glass.
Does anybody know a "reasonable" way to ship a huge package back-its costing me an arm and a leg with the quotes I have been given through UPS and Fed Ex |

Yes, I will contact the Thing Shop again tomorrow and I hope we can work out some shipping resolution so I can get their part back to them safe and sound.
Like I said it looks like a quality windshield, just not what was described, or what I purchased from them in the past and was hoping for.

You might be able to find someone local to you who would be interesting in buying it. |

In the sunlight it is not bad, but at night I would compare it to me driving with my sunglasses on.
That is just the way I see through it, bu like I said I have been driving my Thing daily for 20+ years with a clear windshield and I wear eye glasses as well.
I tried to talk myself into it, but I just do not feel comfortable with the tint on it especially at night.
Anyone in No Ca need a windshield let me know.
Otherwise I hope I can work something out on shipping with the Thing Shop.
Like I said it is a quality DOT windshield, but the tint is just not for me. |

Best windshield I ever had in a Thing was tinted and shaded at the top. Don't think you can buy a new car that don't have a tinted windshield. |

FYI-the Thing Shop now carries two windshields-one with the green tint and a clear one. |
