Oh ok, thanks to Freddie for telling me about this thread, so I'm a bit late in joining the queue, but I also would like a set of mats for my '56!

I have some OG floor mats but no tunnel, sill or bulkhead mats.

Hopefully there will be some news soon - although I still have some way to go before installing the interior (like welding in new pan halves, although the body is almost done)

Just use a bug tunnel mat, you have to trim it down alittle to fit.

Anyone know how close a fit the front firewall mat from a bug is? I know the pan isn't the same, but wouldn't the firewall be close to the same? Just curious.

It might help you to know the bulkhead mat changed quite a bit in the middle of 1956, from carpet with a little bit of rubber to all rubber. If you know your car's chassis number, I can tell you which it would have had from new (if that is of any value to you).

Yes, for the first half year or so, they made the bulkhead like this:

As you can see, if you want total authenticity - you do not have to add sill mats!

Here are a couple more pictures to give you a better idea:

Fortunately, I have molds to make those parts. And they have the correct factory look and ribbing on them - not like some stock rubber that you would get at your local hardware store. Here is a pic:

As you may notice, the mat on the right looks like a better fit - that is because I trimmed it to a close to correct size for the picture. But I send those two mats oversize and longer - like the piece on the left so you can trim (or have them trimmed) to be sewn or glued to the carpet for a proper fit.

I have had these molds ever since I start making Ghia mats years ago, but - I did not think a one half year part would be worth the trouble of running an ad. I think I will put up an ad, after all.

Hi Lemke and Retrowagen, thanks for the replies.

My car was built in November '56, VIN Number: 1340755.

Lemke do you have any mats for it please?

Ghias4ever,

This is a PUBLIC forum. If you have an issue with an order, contact ME - like you did two days ago, did you not receive immediate response?

Removing the part of your post saying you'll refund his money when you have some money, was a good idea .... This is shameful.

downlowmatt, don't buy expensive carpet for the bulkhead - I am getting pretty close to getting a protoype made! The colors may be another issue - if we can determine as a group ( or impose on Dave Ruby ) the closest colors using SEM part numbers SEM offers - they can be painted - SEM flexible spray paint is a great product. And as as far as I know - there were only three mat colors supplied by VW - lemke.

Changing the subject - I have been told that the bulkhead mat attached directly to the metal firewall - but I found this picture:

This shows clearly that there was indeed some padding. does anyone have a full picture of the matting? I am assuming it's the same on both sides.

You can see from this picture I took last year at the Hessisch Oldendorf show this original doesn't look attached...just a loose tailored fit...click on the picture and it will go larger:

This Cognac lowlight belongs to "Panelvan" if you want to ask the owner Pascal questions John: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=15785

This is the only fixing I found on my Lowlight...two long retaining strips, one each side next to the door windlace. They are "U" shaped, screwed to the sidewall and the baulkhead rubber mat slips into the clip and is crimped into place.

The image above is from a 56ish Ghia, which wouldn't have had the full rubber mat. The Ghia above would have had the rubber/carpet mat.
